Trip Overview of Langtang Ganja-La Pass Trek

Langtang Ganja La Pass trek, specially designed off the beaten trail that highlights the Langtang region of Nepalis and descendant of the Tibetan origin, still look like Tibetans. These treks are adventurous and unique than other trekking in Langtang region. Langtang Ganja La pass trekking offers panoramic Himalayan views of beautiful Langtang valley and Helambu valley. Ganja la pass trek follows the alpine forests, rich flora and fauna and high altitude pastureland. The attraction of the Langtang region is it’s closeness to Kathmandu and yet it’s as wild as any Tibetan highlands. The northern parts of the area mainly fall within the boundaries of Langtang National Parks. The main ethnic groups here are Sherpa and Tamang whose religious practices, languages and dress are much similar to those of Tibet. The forests in this region have moderate temperate, subalpine vegetation and diverse wildlife.

We start our tail from Syabru Bensi and follow the Langtang River to the east till Kyanjin Gompa (3,049) where a small Buddhist monastery and a cheese factory began in 1955 by the Swiss Association which will be worth visiting. We also make an exciting excursion to Tserko Ri (5,000m/16,404ft) offering tremendous views of the Langtang Himalaya range. The highest point of this trek is Ganja La Pass (5122m). The Ganja La pass is covered with snow ice most of the times throughout the year. The pass provides a majestic panoramic view of the Langtang Lirung and the snowy summits of the Tibetan border. Langtang Ganja La Pass trek includes the Spectacular mountain views of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Mount, Gaurishanker, Ganesh Himal, Langshisa Ri, Gangchenpo, Yala peak and Naya Kanga which seems to be marvelous throughout the way. After passing the Ganja La Pass, the trail takes you to Melamchi Gaon and Tarke Ghyang. The trail follows a small valley before reaching the glaciated pass where using ropes, crampons, and ice axes may be exciting.

The trail explores a variety of natural splendors, from lush valleys alive with languor monkeys to the towering fir and rhododendron forests bursting with spring color. The Langtang forests are also well known for their wildlife including red pandas, Himalayan black bears, and wild boar and rare tree orchids and the colorful rhododendrons. Langtang Ganja La Trek can be the best trekking destinations for all those who enjoy natural landscape and distinct cultural practices along with biodiversity and medley snow-capped mountains view. Toward the end of the trip, you will also trek through some beautiful rice terraces and many beautiful Buddhist monasteries around the delightful villages of Tarke Ghyang and Sermathang before heading back to Kathmandu.

The very next morning, after breakfast you will be taken for a full day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu valley. You will visit the center of pilgrimage Pashupatinath Temple and Swyambhunath, very ancient and enlisted in UNESCO World Heritage sites. The biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath and the fine arts and historical architecture of Kathmandu Durbar Square take you to the ancient Nepalese culture. On the journey back to the hotel, you can explore the local areas, gullies, and lifestyle.

After morning breakfast we drive out along the north-western hills of Kathmandu for about 7-8hr. You will witness lovely scenery of white snowcapped mountains like Mt. Annapurna II, Manasalu, Ganesh Himal and other minor peaks along the route and as well as the green landscape of hillock, rivers, and village. Enjoy the Himalayan views and lifestyle through the terraced fields and rustic villages. The scenery of foothills and ridgeline vistas goes through the Trishuli Bazaar, Betrawati and Dhunche you feel as if you are heading towards low land. We take our Lunch at the Trishuli Bazaar before continuing further to Dhunche. We descend to Syabrubesi for the overnight stay.

The first-day excitement trail crosses through the Bhote Koshi River flowing down from Tibet and following the Langtang Khola. After a visit to the Gompa of Guru Rinpoche, follow the stone-paved main street out of town over Langtang Khola. After crossing the suspension bridge, the trail gradually ascends up to Bamboo passing by the landslide. The path goes through the subtropical forest which is cover by oak and maple, large spruce, fir and blue pine. We pass through the jungles of oak and rhododendron. The variety wildlife; yellow-throated martens, wild boars, Langur monkeys, red pandas and Himalayan black bears, etc. are inhabitance of the forest. Afterward, your trek ascends gently to Rimche (2400m). And at the end, your trail is level to the Lama Hotel for the overnight stay.

The day starts with a gentle climb, but it soon becomes steeper, climbing through wild forests of hemlocks, oaks, maples and white and pink rhododendrons high above the Langtang Khola. The tantalizing glimpse of snow-capped peaks starts appearing along with the short view of Mt. Langtang Lirung (7244m) through the trees. The trail leads to a log bridge and on climbing further we come across lush meadows of Ghora Tabela (2992m). The trail ascends gradually as the valley opens up into classical U-shaped glacial. Follow the path across the helipad and yak pastures, climb briefly through rhododendrons and scattered Tamang villages. The trail crosses a stream and climbs past several water-driven mills and prayer wheels to the large settlement of Langtang (3430m), headquarter of Langtang National Park. The village has flat-roofed Tibetan style house, and elaborately carved driven windows of the upper village are worth exploring. Valley is surrounded by stone walls enclosing fields where buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips, and barley are planted and easy to find yak and the wild goats wondering around you.

The trail winds through the village and climbs a ridge topped by a large chorten. It then rises gradually past an impressive mani wall, crossing a stream to the small village of Mundu (3442m). After passing several small streams with wooden cantilever bridges and moraines, you can finally see the monastery of Kyanjin Gompa and the dramatic icefall flowing from the peaks of Langtang Lirung and Kimshung. The surroundings are attractive also because of the famous Government operated Cheese factory. We have a chance to test cheese and curd by Yak milk; it is remarkable of this place. After having lunch, we can explore the area with abundant panoramic views of Langtang Lirung (7246m), Genjempol, Kyangjin RI (4750m.), Tsergo RI (5000m.), Ganja La (5160m.), Langshisa- Ri (6427m.), Dorje Lhakpa (6430m.), Naya Kang (5844m.), Yala peak (5500m).

Today is the rest and exploration day of the trekking. We visit the monastery and the cheese factory or may walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice faces and tumbling glaciers of Langtang Lirung or ascend Kyanjin Ri (4350m) and Tserko Ri (5,000m), which is the highest point of this trek. Hike easy for a breath-taking panorama of the Langtang Lirung, Langtang range, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji. We also have options to make a side trip to Langshisa Kharka. There are several alternatives sided trips, the surrounding areas of North having many smaller isolated valleys. Spend your night back to the Kyanjin.

Crossing the Langtang Khola below Kyanjin Gompa the trail makes a steep climb through a forest of rhododendron and juniper. The path goes on ascending high Himalaya area covered with little natural vegetation. We must have to well manage for shelter and food by ourselves. Sometimes we have the scarcity of water and miss the group on the puzzle trail. Then the trail reaches the yak pasture of Ngegang, full of worth able breathtaking mountains scenery and pure of natural beauties. You can see Yaks peacefully grazing and spend your night at tented camp.

The trail continues south, following streams and moraines and climbs steeply towards the pass. The path makes a final steep ascent to the pass, from the pass the trail descends steeply and enters the Yangri Khola Valley. It’d be a strenuous day since crossing Ganja La is one of the steep passes. On the Ganja la pass, you can find it covered with snowy ice most of the times throughout the year. Make the long ascent through the boulders, pass the small lakes, and submit the Ganja La which situated on a rocky moraine. The pass provides a majestic panoramic view of the Langtang Lirung and the snowy summits of the Tibetan border. Climbing up and down the pass can sometimes be tricky due to snowfall and ice. Following the stream through grassy meadows, the trail reaches Keldang where we will set our camp.

With a long tiring day, the trail descends along ridge, grassland, fantastic views of Mountain and its surrounded nature beauties. Then follow the ridge line through small settlements of the villagers of Helambu. You will reach Dukpu where inside the forest we will set our camp.

From, Dukpu the trail descends, and then do a climb to a pass. The views from Pass are spectacular towards the Annapurna Region, Mt. Everest region as well and native mountains. The trail descends through the forest with pine and rhododendron and then drops steeply to Gekye Gompa. Its steep descent is passing tiny herders to the settlement of Tarkeghyang. You can visit one of the oldest Buddhist monastery and picturesque Sherpa villages.

Today the trail is quite easy through a flat land with beautiful forests. The path leads us to cross small forest with the view of the charming village of Helambu region. The trail makes a sweep around the wide valley end between Parachin and Sherpa village of Gangyul of Khumbu region. Sermathang is another pretty Sherpa village where you can visit many ancient monasteries and view of Jugal Himal range. In the bright day, the village provides excellent views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gosaikunda, and Rolwaling; even Everest also in the distance.

After breakfast, the trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. From here take a drive.
