History Behind the name “Everest.”

Interestingly, the earth’s tallest mountain did not get its name from those who had climbed it. The mountain is called for Sir George  Everest, the Welsh Surveyor General of India at the time. He did not need the honor and protested the concept for several reasons.

The political figures in 1865 did not listen and still renamed “Peak XV” to “Everest” in honor of Sir George Everest. What is worse, the Welsh pronunciation is correct “Eave-rest,” not “Ever-est.”!

Mount Everest already had many native names transliterated from totally different alphabets. However, none were common enough to create official while not symptom someone’s feelings. Sagarmatha, the Nepali name for Mt. Everest and therefore the close parkland, wasn’t place into use till the Sixties.

The Tibetan name for Mt. Everest is Chomolungma, which implies “Holy Mother.”

Mount Everest was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary ( a beekeeper from New Zealand) and his Nepalese sherpa, Tenzing Norgay. They were the first person to reach the summit on May 29, 1953, at around 11:30 a.m.

During that time, Tibet was closed to foreigners because of the ongoing conflict with China.

Till now, Nepal allowed only one Everest expeditions per year. However, previous teams had come very near and failed to reach the summit.

There has been enormous controversy and theories in Everest. One of the famous debates is about whether or not British mountaineer George Mallory reached the summit in 1974.
