Tanzania
Tanzania is a popular destination for wildlife safaris, with several national parks, diverse landscapes and a wide range of animals to see. In the open plains of Serengeti National Park and the wild life areas surrounding Mgorongoro, visitors have plenty to explore. During the day, travellers can go on game drives and observe the animals in their natural habitat and gain knowledge about the various wildlife regions.
At Above the Himalaya, we arrange Tanzania safari trips for travellers who want to explore the country’s national parks. Some visitors have only a few days, while others prefer to spend more time travelling between different wildlife areas. We have safari programs of different durations, so you can choose a trip that fits your holiday schedule.
Places to Visit on a Tanzania Safari
Tanzania has several national parks and conservation areas. The northern part of the country is particularly popular with safari travellers because a number of important wildlife destinations can be visited on the same journey.
Serengeti National Park is usually a major reason people plan a safari in Tanzania. The park has wide grasslands where wildebeest, zebras and other grazing animals move in large groups. Lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas also live in this area. If you visit at the right time, you may see part of the Great Migration, when large herds move in search of fresh grass and water. Their location changes throughout the year, so the timing of your visit matters.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has a varied landscape. The main attraction is the Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera with grasslands, water sources and woodland. The crater is home to numerous animals, such as elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and lions. It is a good place to spend time looking for wildlife in a relatively compact area.
Tarangire National Park is another place worth visiting. It is known for its large baobab trees and elephant population. Animals are frequently seen around the Tarangire River during the dry months as they find it more difficult to obtain water in other areas of the park.
The number of parks you can visit depends on the number of days you have. A short safari will allow you to concentrate on a single destination, whereas a longer trip will give you more time to explore other regions.
Animals You May See
There is plenty to look out for during a Tanzania wildlife safari. Many visitors hope to see the Big Five, which comprise lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinoceroses.
Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas and different types of antelope. You may also notice many birds during the drive, particularly near rivers, lakes and wetlands.
Game drives are the main activity on a safari. You travel in a safari vehicle with a local guide who is familiar with the area and can assist you in locating animals. Some sightings happen quickly, while others require patience. Animals move freely, and there is no fixed schedule for when or where they will appear.
Wakati wa Kutembelea Tanzania
Tanzania is suitable for safari travel throughout the year, although some months are better for particular wildlife experiences.
June to October is generally a popular time to visit. These months fall within the main dry season in much of northern Tanzania. Grass and other plants are less thick and animals tend to congregate around rivers and water bodies. This can help them to be easier to see on game drives.
Another interesting time is January to March, particularly during the wildebeest calving season when the visitors are interested. In these months, a lot of wildebeest will deliver in the Ndutu and southern Serengeti area. The herds are also around predators.
The rainy seasons are associated with green scenery and favorable birdwatching. Nevertheless, there are roads that may get muddy, and movement between various regions might be delayed. In picking your traveling dates, it is always good to consider the weather and the wildlife regions you want to visit.

A Few Things to Know Before Your Safari
Safari days often start early because many animals are more active in the morning. You may spend several hours in the vehicle, stopping when your guide spots wildlife or finds an interesting place to observe the surroundings. Itinerary also depends on afternoon drives.
Pack comfortable clothes that are suitable for warm days and cooler mornings. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars and a camera are useful items to bring. Neutral coloured clothing is a practical choice for game drives. It is also worth carrying a light jacket for early morning outings.
Accommodation may be in a safari lodge or tented camp, depending on the package. Meals and transport arrangements are also based on the selected trip, so check the inclusions and exclusions before travelling.
