Altitude sickness in Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Mount Kailash Parikrama is located at 4,500 meters above sea level, whereas Mansarovar Lake is located at 4,590 meters. At such a high altitude, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is commonly
experienced by people. However, the effects of AMS vary from person to person since some individuals only feel a slight or unnoticeable effect while others experience a very strong one. Travelers need to practice yoga and participate in physical exercise before embarking on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra since healthy individuals are less prone to get AMS. Altitude sickness symptoms include discomfort, poor sleeping patterns, headaches, and difficulty breathing.

Health precaution

At higher elevations, the oxygen level is lower. The unfavorable atmosphere and high altitude cause several illnesses that are often not seen in the lowlands. There are several symptoms, including headache, nausea, lassitude, lethargy, dyspnea, general unease (malaise), elevated irritability, a little loss of balance, disorientation, incoherence, and sleeplessness. It is common to see signs of altitude sickness in people’s respective age, sexual orientations, or level of physical condition. The best solution is gradual acclimation. Avoid using sedatives, sleeping pills, and powerful antibiotics. Some signs show that the body is trying to adjust to its new surroundings.

The ideal plan is to purposefully slow down all activities while adhering to the following guidelines:

  • Slow down your movement and rest frequently.
  • Let yourself feel excited and relaxed.
  • Stop chatting, shouting, or talking.
  • Take a third of your normal stride and pace while you walk.
  • Don’t overload yourself.
  • 15 minutes of walking are followed by 5 minutes of rest.
  • Anytime you start to feel uneasy, simply stop; take a break, and unwind.
  • Avoid fights and disregard abrupt outbursts from your fellow travelers.
  • Be silent and grin as you do so.
  • Never ascend too quickly or too high.
  • Drink a lot of water; never go forward on an empty stomach.
  • Put on your headphones and listen to your favorite music, bhajans, or other forms of chanting.
  • You can even recite a prayer or imagine the world around you by your positive ideas.
  • Take care not to get sick or get a cold.
  • Being overdressed is preferable to be inadequately protected.
  • Avoid bathing or drinking water from lakes, streams, or rivers when traveling because your system isn’t prepared for this.
  • In the tent, wear your boots or Keds.
  • During prolonged driving periods, shield yourself from the sun and wind. Hands, feet, and face must all be protected.
  • Potholes occur on uneven terrain, steep slopes, and slippery banks. Take care when walking
and looking around the scene. If possible, don’t do both at the same time.
Always pay attention to your guide or an experienced person.
  • Always stick with your group through the journey.
Overexertion is to be avoided on this excursion.
Drink a lot of water, at least 3 liters per day.
Keep your body warm by wearing thick clothes.

Physical fitness

You must be in good physical condition to finish this journey. If you have health problems, there’s a chance they might get worse while you’re on the yatra. Please begin exercising like walking, running, yoga, and other breathing exercises at least one month before the yatra because Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are located at high elevations.

You are good to go on this trip as long as you don’t have any illnesses or medical disorders. Lack of fitness would make it difficult for you to handle the severe circumstances on the trek. Before doing this yatra, you must keep your physique in good shape. Here are some recommendations for getting in shape for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Tour:

Walking

You must engage in trekking, regardless of whether you choose to follow the guided itinerary or go with a private tour company. This becomes crucial if you plan on performing the “parikrama” of Mount Kailash. You must quickly walk for at least 4 to 5 km each day to get your body used to the activity. If you don’t have an active lifestyle, start by walking a few kilometers each day, then aim to increase that amount as much as you can.

Jogging

Try to step up your workout routine by a step and start jogging if you’re capable of already walking a few kilometers each day. Despite what it may look like at first, jogging is not at all challenging. Jogging is a terrific way to raise your body’s fitness level and will expand your lung capacity.

Climb stairs

You can begin your workout by simply walking up the stairs. You just need to climb the steps as much as you can. Both the home and the office would benefit from this. As often as you can, choose the stairs instead of the elevator. Walking up and down the stairs is preferable to joining a gym or purchasing a treadmill.

Aerobics

Before embarking on the Kailash Yatra, you don’t need to join a gym and bulk up. It is sufficient to enroll in an aerobics class nearby, or, even better, to join a group of neighbors who share your interests and practice aerobics.

You can find inspiration by watching videos on YouTube. Examinations of health: Even if you have chosen a private tour company for your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, it is important to visit the doctor and discuss your trip plans. He will request that you undergo a few tests. This will greatly boost your confidence before the Yatra. Please visit your doctor to get examined for this trek.

Consume multivitamins

Even if you are in good health and have no difficulties, it is a good idea to take multivitamin tablets every day. This ensures that your body receives all of the vitamins it requires.

Visa and Documentation

  • You require a Chinese visa together with a Tibet travel permit to enter China and go to the Mount Kailash area. Kailash Mansarovar is situated in the remote part of Tibet, which is both a protected and a restricted area.
  • The Chinese visa is granted to groups rather than to a single person. The paper-based group visa is only for Nepalis traveling on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
  • Everyone must have this visa to enter China. Additionally, a Tibet Travel Permit issued by the Chinese government is required.
  • You must have a passport if you plan to visit the Kailash in Tibet. This can be arranged by the company you are traveling with. They will complete the entire visa application and documentation procedures at the time of the trip.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is an essential document. However, it is not necessary to have insurance to confirm a visa or permission. It is only for addressing your security and urgent needs. Ensure that
your insurance covers travel up to 5,600 meters above sea level as well as medical expenses and emergency rescue. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra’s highest peak is reached during the Kora when pilgrims arrive at the Dolma La Pass at 5,943 m (19,500 ft.).

At this height, there is a chance of experiencing either mild or severe altitude sickness. It is a must that you obtain appropriate travel insurance that covers costs that you may incur as a result of health difficulties and emergency evacuations before talking with and receiving advice from your travel agency. Make sure your insurance provider is properly informed about all the activities planned for the vacation and that the policy also includes coverage for medical costs associated with emergency air ambulance or helicopter rescue.

Currency

Kailash Mansarovar is a mountain range in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The most often-used currency in Tibet is the Chinese yuan. However, most businesses in China also openly accept US dollars. For a smooth voyage, it is advisable to bring Chinese yuan. Although they are not always evident, a number of local establishments take credit cards, and it can be challenging to access ATMs. Although it is common to exchange US dollars in Tibet, the exchange rates may not be as favorable as elsewhere.

Therefore, before you go on your vacation, we advise you to exchange your dollars for the Chinese renminbi at substantially higher rates in Kathmandu. In contrast to local teahouses and hotels, where US money may not be accepted, Chinese cash is widely accepted across Tibet. You can use the currency converter at www.xe.com to find out the most recent exchange rates throughout the world.

Accommodations and Transportation

Tibet is situated in the most mountainous terrain in the world, yet China’s transportation network makes it easy to get there. Buses and Jeeps are easily accessible for local transportation within
Tibet’s districts. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra also offers a helicopter alternative, which helps travelers get where they’re going swiftly while still admiring the area’s breathtaking beauty.
Information about the Kailash Yatra for NRIs In Tibet’s remote areas, there are a number of guest houses that are open during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

However, there are just a few basic utilities available. In remote locations, there are modest resorts and hotels. Because there are no hotels or home stays in the high-altitude areas, you must bring a tent and sleep while on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra excursion.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra trip cost

Travel to Tibet is highly controlled by all international visitors. Different fees are charged by the Tibetan government to Indian and non-Indian citizens, particularly those who are participating in
the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. In general, the cost might be anywhere between $2700 and $4000 per person. The route you choose, the number of people in your team, the time of year you visit, the mode of transportation, the class of your accommodations and meals, as well as other considerations, will all have an impact on the cost of your Kailash Mansarovar excursion.

Trip Note

  • Do not bring any books, magazines, or pictures about Tibet, Buddhism, or Lamas. The Custom of China won’t allow entering with those kinds of materials.
  • Fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, liquids like Ghee, and Oils are not allowed entering from Chinese customs at Kodari.

Mount Kailash Manasarovar Yatra

Puru Timalsena – Managing Director of Above The Himalaya Trekking (P) Ltd, organized the trip for the 6 of us for the Kailash Mansarover Yatra. We had an option for organizing our trip through an Indian travel agent but choose to go with Puru, due to his honesty, committment and sincerity. We read on the Web that the facilities for the trip was very basic but Puru and his team managed to get us best of the basic facilities throughout the trip. Thank you very much Puru for making our journey memorable.

There was a minor issue with our travel – Due to restrictions by Chinese Authorities and communication gaps, our group size increased from 6 to 23 but Puru after our return from the trip, ammended our contract and promptly adjusted the cost charged for a larger group size – demonstrating his honesty. This is 1st time in my 25 years of travel, I have met a tour operator, who values his committments and is honest to customer. Thank you Puru – we will come back to you again

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Trip of a life time

Me and my group did Mount Kailash Mansarovar tour with Above The Himalaya trekking. I have found Above the Himalaya trekking through google and choose from a few companies. Picking up our group from the Kathmandu airport to accommodation and sightseeing in Kathmandu, travel, and accommodation in Tibet, taking care of our comfort and safety every single day, these guys were absolutely fantastic and professional. Their guide was very professional and experienced. He made sure all is in order and ensure our comfort. The Tibet part guide was also very polite and helpful. The challenge of high altitude in the Tibetan mountains was quite challenging. But these guys made sure that every member of the group stayed healthy, safe, and energetic.

I highly recommend the Above The Himalaya team for the Kailash Mansarovar trip. This is your value-for-money travel choice. I am already planning to bring another group with them.
