Overview of Luxury Mount Kailash Tour

Kailash- the most revered pilgrims, the holiest of all, the dream mountain for many is hard to reach destination. But we the Above the Himalaya team is here to change that and thus we introduce to you our luxury Mount Kailash tour which will allow you to reach Kailash within a week.

Enjoy our 7 days Mount Kailash tour with luxurious accommodations of four star hotel when available and private transportation so you have comfort every step of the way. Generally, most trips to Kailash concentrate on the Darshana of its northern face only which need a challenging outer and inner parikrama comprising 4 days of journey.

However, unlike others, our luxury Mount Kailash tour will provide you the opportunity to appreciate the magnificent southern face of the holiest Kailash without the need for any exhausting long treks.

In just one week, our short Mount Kailash tour will not only take you to the holiest peak in the Universe but will also allow you to experience the tranquil and spiritual night beside the maternal Lake Mansarovar.

You will also get to stand in front of the magnificent and the most esteemed Jain Tirthasthal (Pilgrim site) called Ashtapad near Kailash which is another important highlight of our luxury Mount Kailash tour.

We have designed the travel days of our Ashtapad Kailash Mansarovar tour to be easy, simple, short, luxurious, and accessible to everyone who exhibits good physical and mental conditioning.

Kailash rises 6638 m in height into the sky of Ngari County of Tibet which is the center for four main religions and four main rivers in Asia: Karnali, Brahmaputra, Sutlej and Indus.

In Buddhism, Kailash is the snow treasure and the dwelling of Buddha himself. In Hinduism, Kailash is the most loved holy dwelling of Lord Mahadev/Shiva- the one who vanquish the evil from the Universe.

The four sides or the walls of Kailash face the four major directions of the planet symbolizing the faces of Lord Shiva.

In Jainism, Kailash is the very Ashtapad, where Adinath Rishabhadeva, their very first Tirthankar achieved Moksha or salvation.

Right beneath the pious peak is the 4600 m high mother Lake Mansarovar which is believed to be emerged from the Lord Brahma’s mind (Creator). This sun-shaped lake is thought to be blessed by Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Brahma thus drawing countless pilgrims seeking the purification and liberation for themselves and their ancestors.

Our luxury Mount Kailash tour has aimed to take you on all these divine destinations in both comfort and style. The adventure begins with a long drive from Kathmandu to Kerung.

After a day of acclimatization in Kerung, we will continue our journey to Lake Mansarovar via Saga. Here, you will have the chance to participate in spiritual rituals such as puja, homa, and Havana by the lakeside.

After this, we will then head on our 4 by 4 vehicle to Darchen, the beginning point for all the Kailash pilgrimages. From Darchen, we will then transport you to Serlung Gompa, where a short ascent will lead you to the 4900 m high Ashtapad Parvat.

Known as Eight Steps, this peak is located close to Nandi Parvat and the southern face of Kailash which offers the stunning view of its spine-like formation.

The Ashtapad has numerous meanings: for some Ashtapad is the great Kailash itself and for some Ashtapad is the huge mountain series consisting of eight peaks and Kailash is the second peak while the Ashtapad Parvat is the main one.

However, there is one thing certain that is it is holy and significant not only for Jains but also for Buddhists and Hindus. Here, you will get enough time for your meditation and personal rituals before we return to Kathmandu taking the same circular route.

Along with this mystical energy and experience, our 7 days Mount Kailash tour will also bestow you with the amazing nature that Kailash is engulfed in.

You will get to marvel at the stunning high plateaus, picturesque landscapes, and enjoy direct views of Gaurishankar, Lhotse, and Shishapangma.

You will also encounter wildlife such as wild Yak, snow leopards, Bharal, red and sand foxes, Kiang, and Himalayan Tahr. You will also get to experience all four climates from subtropical to alpine within the same trip. Thus our luxury Mount Kailash tour is not only made for pilgrims but also for tourists looking for a distinct tour in Tibet.

For the best immersive experience, we suggest you to engage in our luxury Mount Kailash tour between March and October.

Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Kerung (2900 m) via Rasuwagadhi, 175 km, 8 to 9 hours

Our 7 days Mount Kailash tour commences from today with a long tiring yet very beautiful scenic drive towards the Tibet town of Kerung. Our 4 by 4 private vehicle will collect us from the gate of our hotel and take us out of Kathmandu through Thankot.

It will then take the long Pasang Lhamu Highway with Trishuli flowing alongside by side. We will advance through numerous Nepali mountain hamlets of Rani Pauwa, Dhunche, Syabrubesi, Timure, and Ghatte Khola located inside the National Park of Langtang.

As we journey via these villages, we will not only see the typical mountain setting of Nepal, but also the sensational spectacle of Ganesh, Langtang, Manaslu, and Annapurna.

A little ahead of Ghatte Khola, the Immigration office will stop us to inspect our papers and baggage after which we will cross the Rasuwagadhi border and get to the Tibetan side.

Our Nepali team will leave us after our gracious Tibetan guide receives us and takes us on a two-hour brief drive to Kerung through the beautiful expansive Tibetan highway.

The monastery graciously displays the skill of the age old Nepali art but the main thing to see here is the captivating sculpture of Nepali Princess Bhrikuti.

After the Gompa excursion, the Kerung Railway bridge awaits our visit and we can also observe the settlements near the border near the gorge of Kerung.
Then going through the several national and international restaurants (Tibetan, Nepali, Chinese, and Indian) in the town, we will drive back towards our hotel.

Reason to Select our Luxury Mount Kailash Tour

Overnight Stay and Spiritual Ritual at Lake Mansarovar

Our short Mount Kailash tour travel program has included a night beside the mother Lake Mansarovar which is considered a powerful source of enlightenment and energy.

Like Kailash, the lake also equally has religious and spiritual significance for the Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists. The Hindus believe the lake is imbued with the sublime blessings of Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvati.

The Buddhists link the lake to Maya Devi’s conception of the Buddha and for the Jains, it is the revered site where their Adinath meditated.

Thus, practicing the rituals by the lake is said to liberate the souls from the non-stop cycle of rebirth. We will have a peaceful morning on the Lake where you will partake in an hour-long homa and yagya all the while absorbing the serenity of Kailash.

Moment at Asthapad

Ashtapad is a significant pilgrimage destination in the Ashtapad Kailash Mansarovar tour which has a deeply rooted spiritual and historical connection with Kailash.

It is believed that Ashtapad is none other than Kailash itself while others believe Ashtapad is a series of eight mountain peaks among which Kailash is the second.

It is in fact the very exact site where Bhagwan Rishabhadev, the first Jain Tirthankar, achieved Nirvana. In his memory, his son, Chakravarti King Bharat, constructed a stunning temple adorned with crystal and gemstones.

Around 7 years ago, a satellite image confirmed the existence of the golden temple structure on the Kailash justifying the myth. Ashtapad also means the Eight Steps which signify the ascension of eight steps to reach the temple.

The Ashtapad Darshana will also immerse you in the breathtaking peace and natural beauty of the inner Kailash region. You will experience this sacred site with us, where you can meditate and feel the energy of Adinath.

Darshana of Southern Face of Kailash

Ashtapad blesses us with the view of the exquisite south face of Kailash where we can observe the spine-like structure that is said to represent Lord Shiva’s spine or Meru Danda.

Jains believe this spine is actually the eight steps to the Ashtapad palace. Worshiping this face is said to shield you from untimely death. It is also believed that this face of Kailash is composed from lapis lazuli. Our short Mount Kailash tour will allow you to experience Kailash from this unique southern viewpoint.

Full journey support with management of your logistics (accommodations, meals, and transportation)

You will have the ultimate luxury on our 7 days short Mount Kailash tour where we have carefully planned all the aspects of the tour. We will manage all your transportation, accommodations, meals, and necessary permits for the tour.

We will also handle all your visas and permits, so all you need to do is prepare for the adventure and enjoy the comfort we provide.

Luxury Mount Kailash Tour: Best Season and Time

If we consider the auspicious events and pleasant weather, then the most perfect time to partake in our luxury Mount Kailash tour will occur between March and October.

The Jain festival Paryushana takes place in August or September, while Mahavira Jayanti (Birth of Rishabhadeva) occurs in March or April. October brings Diwali marking the day when Rishabhadeva achieved the salvation.

Likewise, the full moon days falling in April or May align with the grand Saga Dawa Festival for Buddhists, and the full moon occuring in June and July is significant for Hindus who celebrate Janai Purnima Festival.

From the climatic perspective, the months of April, May, June, September, and the first half of October will be the most perfect window for the 7 days Luxury Mount Kailash tour.

During these heavenly months, the Kailash region and in fact the entire Tibet enjoys the splendid weather.Tibet sees the spring in March, April and May and Fall in September and October.

Both the changing seasons feature the bright azure sky, mild cooling breeze, and comfortable heat between 9 to 15 degrees Celsius. The monsoon rain starts to appear in Nepal in June, July, and August but the rain is not that heavy in Tibet.

At the end of October however, the heat in Kailash drops to below 5 degree Celsius which keep on decreasing to minus degrees in December, January and February.

The high wind starts to blow to 20 m/s starting from late October accompanied by significant snowfall till February.

Luxury Mount Kailash Tour: Level of Difficulty

Our short Mount Kailash tour introduces a moderate challenge to its tourists amid the stunning highlands of Tibet. Although the adventure commences from the lower heights of Nepal, you will quickly reach to 2900 m in Kerung.

The successive days of our Luxury Mount Kailash tour will lead you to the average elevation between 3000 m to 4000 m eventually concluding at 4900 m of Ashtapad.

The tour lasts only seven days and is less physically tiring and demanding in nature than other Kailash trips that eliminates the need for extensive trekking.

There are no long Parikrama route and you will engage in only a brief upward walk along the glacial path from Serlung Gompa to Ashtapad. However, it is the Himalaya and the dramatically changing climate is its nature.

At Ashtapad, you may see the sunny sky one moment which can quickly give way to dark clouds. Therefore, the main challenge during our luxury Mount Kailash tour arises from the altitude for which we have incorporated a rest day in Kerung town to facilitate your acclimatization.

Who can join our Ashtapad Kailash Mansarovar Tour?

The Tibet Tourism Bureau has set specific guidelines for participating in any Mount Kailash tours. Generally, people between 10 and 75 years of age are eligible to participate in any Mount Kailash tour.

The rule is slightly different for Indians who are allowed to go to Kailash only if they are between 18 to 70 years of age.

Thus anyone between these age groups who is in their prime physical and mental health and free from any serious health issues especially related to heart and lungs can participate in our short Mount Kailash tour.

The short nature, the absence of long walks, and the luxurious overnight stays make this tour available to even those who have joint issues and are incapable of longer hikes.

However, those who have heart problems, lung diseases, asthma, or any type of other serious ailments should consult their doctors and explain to them about the tour’s nature. Only after receiving medical clearance should you consider joining us.

Necessary Training and Preparation for our Short Mount Kailash Tour

Our short Mount Kailash tour is a simple and enjoyable experience, different from the other exhausting Kailash trips. It is less of a physical journey that includes only a short ascent on foot to Ashtapad.

Otherwise, the entire journey is conducted via private transport, that removes the need for the long arduous hikes. However, the path to Ashtapad does present some challenges which runs over the glacier with scattered boulders.

To prepare for this segment, you should consider practicing running short distance every day or walking or swimming and cycling. Some stair climbing one or two times a day will also help you to tackle the uprising trail to Ashtapad.

If feasible, you can also hike up to a hill rising to 3000 m so you can be pre-acclimitized before our luxury Mount Kailash tour.

We like to emphasize here that this journey is much of a mental than the physical one. So we suggest you to learn about Kailash, Ashtapad, Mansarovar, and the local climate.

This will set for you realistic expectations and avoid any unwelcome surprises along the way.

Altitude Sickness/Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS during Luxury Mount Kailash Tour

The altitude sickness may occur during our Ashtapad Kailash Mansarovar tour which arises because of the rapid ascent from lower to higher elevations in Tibet.

On the first day of our 7 days Mount Kailash tour, you will spend the night at Kerung’s height of 2900 m, and on the second day, you will ascend over 1500 m to reach Saga.

The adventure will finally conclude taking you to 4900 m at Ashtapad. Most of our guests exhibit the signs of AMS as soon as they are in Kerung. That’s why, we have a rest day at Kerung for your adaptation as much as possible.

Please understand that both drivers and passengers can be affected by AMS even more because of the quick elevation changes. Also, anyone regardless of fitness, gender and age can be the victim of AMS.

If you are not able to get accustomed to the new elevation or new air, you may have the occurrence of difficulty sleeping, appetite loss, irritability, confusion, nausea, dizziness and  headache.

In such cases, you should keep drinking water and fluids as much as possible. You should also get adequate sleep when the adaptation process is more rapid and you should also maintain strong immunity.

As for the therapeutic measures, you can opt for the herbal Hongjingtian medicine or Diamox. If you experience any sign of AMS on the road, please tell our guide who may provide you with supplemental oxygen or assist you in descending safely.

2. Mount Kailash tour via Simikot

This mode of travel offers you the utmost in luxury and comfort, that will allow you to enjoy a scenic helicopter ride to Kailash. Your journey begins with a very brief flight to Nepalgunj, a southern Terai city from where you will again travel by air towards Simikot.

Then a chartered heli will ride you to Hilsa of Humla region from where your drive begins leading you through Taklakot to Darchen. It is a bit expensive option but more lavish, stylish, and comfortable specially for those with limited time.

As for the formal paper works, you will be needing Tibet Bureau Permit which is also called the Tibet Visa or the Tibet Travel Permit/TTP. When you decide to go into Tibet from Nepal, a Chinese Group Visa is eesential.

Since our visit takes us to the sensitive military controlled Kailash zone, few other permits are also obligatory which we will tell you below.

When you go through our short Mount Kailash tour details and satisfied, you need to confirm the tour. Then, you will have to forward us your official scanned documents: the passport and the photo.

We will then sending them to our affiliated partner in Tibet who will handle the permit application proceedings for us. Please kindly confirm our luxury Mount Kailsh tour one month before its schduled departure date.

When forwarding your official papers to us, kindly note that they must be:

  • Photo measurements: 51 by 51 mm
  • Photo Background: Plain white
  • No glasses and makeup
  • The residual time of your passport should be 6 months counting after your arrival date
  • The passport must be forwarded in color
  • The passport must contain 2 to 3 empty pages

Let’s now go through the permits and Visa details. When you are taking our Ashtapad Kailash Mansarovar tour from Nepal, as your local traveling partner in Nepal, we will be assisting you in procuring the two mandatory papers: the TTP and the Chinese Group Visa.

As we have stated earlier, few other permits are also compulsory for an Kailash tour and trip because of its restricted nature. They include the Military permit, the Alien Travel Permit/Public Security Bureau (PSB), and the Foreign Affairs Permit. Our Tibetan partner will take charge of obtaining these three permits.

Tibet Visa or TTP

The Tibet Visa or the TTP is a very important official paper provided by the Tourism Bureau office of Tibet to foreign tourists. Once you have this paper, you can explore any part of Tibet (except for the sensitive and closed regions).

This paper will have all the information about your Tibet trip including your name, personal info, your intended travel destination, your place of stay, number of days you are staying, your traveling route, and so on.

That’s why we have to send all the details and your documents to our travel partner in Tibet with the planned travel program. Once the application procedure is on the way, no alterations can be made.

So please go through all the travel program and details to book our luxury Mount Kailash tour. Our affiliated partner will oversee the management of the TTP application after which they will forward us the official invitation letter.

This letter is necessary to present in the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu for the Chinese Group Visa. The TTP is expected to be ready within 10 to 15 work days, once its is ready, it will be collected by our Tibetan guide presented upon our Tibet arrival.

Chinese Group Visa

Please understand that the in-person and simultaneous presence of all our guests or members of a group at the Embassy of China in Kathmandu is mandatory for the proceedings of a Chinese Group Visa.

We must all together submit our original passports, photos, and fingerprints for registration at the Embassy. The original passport will be returned with the arrival of the group visa.

The embassy provides two options for the group visa processing. The normal way or the standard way will take around 4 office days for the visa procedure and costs varies between US Dollars 70 to 170 per member depending on the country of their passport.

For the US citizens, the cost of the standard group visa fee will be US Dollars 175 per person.

The other option for the visa processing is through the express way that takes fro 2 to 3 office days. The price can vary between US Dollars 90 to 180 again depending on the country of the traveler.

Please plan your Kathmandu flights during the weekdays as the Embassy of China is closed on the weekends. One more point that you need to comprehend is that the Group Visa as the name implies will be issued for the whole group as one.

It means all the members in a group of luxury Mount Kailash tour must have the same travel dates of arrival and departure in Tibet.

Kailash Trips Re-opened for Indian Pilgrims

Very optimistic news has come for the Indian pilgrims. The Kailash tour which had been out of their reach for nearly five long years is now soon to reopen in 2025.

The deal made between India and China has led to the positive agreement between the two nations resulting in the reopening of Kailash trips for Indian passport holders which was halted for them due to political conflicts between two nations.

While the official date has not been announced yet, preparations are underway and the time can happen anytime between May and September.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not a must for our 7 days Luxury Mount Kailash tour but we strongly advise you to get one. Although our short Mount Kailash tour doesn’t include tough hikes, but you will still be heading into a remote Himalayan area of Tibet where the weather can be harsh and unpredictable, and access to modern medical care may be limited.

If something goes wrong during the tour, you may require urgent transport to cities like Lhasa or Shigatse, or even to your home by helicopter.

There is also the chance of injuries, like slips or falls on the way to Ashtapad, which may lead to serious complications or you may even go through serious AMS.

Plus, any unexpected issues may happen during your short Mount Kailash tour such as tour delays, postponement, luggage damage and misplace, extended lodging stay etc.

Therefore, get the travel insurance that will offer you all these extensive coverage along with the helicopter rescue for altitudes to 5,000 meters.
