Everest base camp group trek

The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular treks in the world. Most adventurers who visit Nepal are almost always keen on going to the base camp of the world’s tallest mountain, if not conquering the peak itself. Everest Base Camp group trek can make the trek easier, and more convenient, and the altitude climbing goals attainable.

Unlike most other trekking locations in Nepal, Everest Base Camp is located in one of the most rural regions, the Khumbu region of the country. Hence, you won’t find half as many facilities and amenities here as you do in other destinations in Nepal itself.

However, in recent years, due to increased trekking activity, there has been an improvement in the amenities and services available to the trekkers. This, in turn, has encouraged more trekkers, both beginners and experts, to frequent the trekking point.

Everest Base Camp Group Trek, as opposed to a solo trek, is preferable among trekkers. Since Everest Base Camp is very popular among travelers all around the world, it is not only experienced trekkers who visit the location. Therefore, it would be fair to say that Everest Base Camp Group Trek has made it possible even for young trekkers who are not as seasoned to complete the trek successfully.

In this article, we have mentioned everything you need to know about Everest Base Camp Group Trek. If you’re planning to go to the EBC anytime soon, make sure to read till the end so as to not miss out on any important detail!

Overview of Everest Base Camp Group Trek

Everest Base Camp is situated at a height of 5,364 m (17,598 ft) above sea level. In comparison to the humongous height of Mount Everest, the height of the base camp has made it simpler for adventurers to reach close to the mountain without actually having to climb it.

Whenever you visit the base camp, you won’t only be enjoying the end destination but the entire trek including all the amazing and unique locations you will be exploring. Everest Base Camp is for everyone, whether you are an expert or not.

There is, however, a requirement for every trekker to be as careful as they can while they are on their journey. The trails are not always kind. Henceforth, you always have to keep an eye out for any possible dangers within you and in the surroundings.

The Everest Base Camp Trek is also a ticket for explorers to go through every possible element in the long-isolated Khumbu region of Nepal. Not many decades ago, the region had been unknown to the world outside it. Eventually, as the Sherpa refugees shifted from Tibet to the Himalayas in Nepal, the place started getting recognition as their habitat.

Likewise, mountaineering activities in the later years, precisely speaking, the 1950s, made it possible for travelers worldwide to pay a visit to the Himalayas. This way, Everest Base Camp became one of the most known and sought-after trekking or even travel destinations in the world.

Everest Base Camp Group Trek Highlights

Many aspects of Everest Base Camp stand out from any other trek you’ll go on in your life, regardless of the location. In Nepal, there are plenty of trekking destinations and locations that will give you the adventurous thrill, but none compares to the EBC trek.

In addition to this, the Everest Base Camp Group Trek has grown popular over the years because of its ease. The nature of the group trek has led to the growth in its demand as well. As of now, tourists from all around the globe have been signing up for group treks to the base camp early on, before the trekking season even starts. And, this is not without significant reasons.

The following are some highlights of the Everest Base Camp Group Trek:

12 Days Short Trek

When you think of going on a trek to the base camp of the world’s tallest peak, you might assume that the trek is going to take more than a month or even at least a month. But, let us do the big reveal for you, it won’t take you half as much as a month to complete the trek. You and your trekking group can complete the entire trek within only 12 days.

Since it becomes a shorter trek for the trekkers, they can easily take time off their daily work for a brief vacation to the Himalayas. This also allows you to take a few days off your travel time to explore more locations than just the Everest Base Camp.

Close View of The Himalayas

Everest Base Camp Group Trek also serves visitors with the most alluring views of the Himalayas. When you are either in Everest Base Camp or Kala Patthar, you come closest to Mount Everest, without actually having to climb it.

If you are a photographer or simply an aesthete, then you will more than appreciate the treat your eyes will get during this journey. Not only is the end destination appealing to your sight, but the trails are also just as pleasing, given that you will get a view of the mountains as soon as you start your Everest Base Camp Trek.

Better Learning Opportunities

Going to the Everest Base Camp Group Trek also will help you learn about the locals, trekkers, and the place, better. When you are traveling or trekking without a group, there are fewer chances of you getting good opportunities to open yourself up for learning.

The more people in a group of trekkers, the more you’ll learn. It is not only beginners who will participate in the group trek. Hence, when you interact with experienced trekkers, guides, and further with the locals, knowledge will accompany adventure.

Namche Bazaar Excursion

When you’re going to or coming back from the Everest Base Camp Group Trek, you will get an opportunity to go on the Namche Bazaar excursion. This location is the most famous one for acclimatization and rest.

Trekkers won’t, whatsoever, be only resting or remaining inside the teahouse or a hotel when they’re here. Not only is this the oldest marketplace in Khumbu, but it is also a place where you will find the most amenities and facilities.

If you have lost or have not carried your gear, then this is also the perfect place to buy them. The prices, however, are going to be more expensive than elsewhere. Similarly, you can also purchase local finds like butter lamps, organic veggies which you can have your hotel cooks cook for you, or souvenirs made by the authentic craftsmen of Khumbu.

The marketplace is lively every day. But, the most merry it is is every other Saturday. You will find yourself immersed in the Tibetan Nepalese culture when you’re in the Saturday market. Locals come forth with the best they can offer to fellow locals, as well as trekkers, during this weekly fair.

Sherpa Culture Exploration

Khumbu, including the Everest Base Camp, is dominated by the Sherpa culture. Sherpa people have shifted to the Everest region for a while and they have not set traditions, dialects, and a distinct lifestyle different from the rest of the world here.

The Sherpa culture can be considered a blend of Nepalese and Tibetan culture. There aren’t many cultures in the world that may resemble this one, as it, in itself, is a hybrid of varying traditions, languages, and lifestyles.

That said, trekkers will most definitely feel a sense of uniqueness in every aspect they experience during their journey to the Everest Base Camp.

View of Sunrise From Kala Patthar

While we have mentioned the amazing and the closest view of Mount Everest that you’ll get from Kala Patthar, we truly cannot miss out on the beautiful scene of sunrise when you are in Kalapathar.

This is exactly why your trek to Everest Base Camp will be scheduled early in the morning. This way, you can get a stunning view without having to sacrifice a sight that may stick in your memory in the best possible way for the rest of your life.

Khumbu Terrains

The terrains in the Khumbu region make for a landscape view that is unmissable for any trekker. The scenery is one that you will have to witness at least once in your life. Though more on the drier side in contrast to most trekking destinations in Nepal, you will find yourself falling in love with every step you take on the trail.

Everest Base Camp Group Trek Itinerary

Everest Base Camp Group Trek has an itinerary of a little less than two weeks, precisely 12 days only. During these days, you will get to go through almost every element of the Everest
region without compromise.

The following is the detailed itinerary for the Everest base camp group trek.

Day 1: Flight From Kathmandu to Lukla And Trek From Lukla to Phakding

Since you will be starting your trek on the very first day, your morning will start early. After a hearty breakfast at your hotel in Kathmandu, you will catch a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The flight, in itself, will become an adventure as you can see amazing views on your way as the scenery shifts from busy cities to timid rural villages and landscapes.

Once you land in Lukla, you may get a few minutes to an hour or two to rest and then start trekking towards Phakding. The trail from Lukla to Phakding is very adventurous and serene. Having come from the bustling city of Kathmandu, trekkers will find themselves refreshed on the trails.

You will then be spending a night in a teahouse in Phakding.

Day 2: Trek From Phakding to Namche Bazaar

You will wake up on the second day in Phakding, preparing for a trek that will lead to colors and excursions in the end. On this day, you will trek to Namche Bazaar, quite possibly the liveliest place in Khumbu.

After a few hours of trekking from Phakding, you will reach the destination. You can rest for a while and go for an evening stroll around the many shops and local sites that you can find in Namche Bazaar. If not, you can rest at either a hotel or a teahouse you’re staying in.
You will spend a night there.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar With a Brief Day Hike to Syangboche

On the third day of your Everest Base Camp Group Trek, you will rise and stay in Namche Bazaar throughout the day. However, you are just as open to choosing a day hike to the nearest landmark called Syanboche.

You need to use this day as a way of resting and acclimatizing as the days ahead of you will be tiring and will require you to habituate to changing altitudes as well. Whether you go on a hike to Syangboche or remain in your hotel, you will still be spending the night in Namche Bazaar.

Day 4: Trek From Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

Once you have completed your acclimatization period, you will prepare for your trek to Tengboche village on the fourth day in the morning time. Tengboche village is a blend of culture from the Sherpa people and religious significance.

You will be able to pay a visit to the ever-famous and biggest monastery in the Khumbu region when you’re in Tengboche, the Tengboche monastery. This monastery is known to have been destroyed and rebuilt several times in history and has a major significance in Buddhist culture.

Trekkers will be made to spend a night at the traditionally rich village of Tengboche after the trek for the day is over.

Day 5: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche

The fifth day will resume with another trek to a different location called Dingboche. It is the closest location to Tengboche. So, it also possesses similar features to the former village. The trek will be both adventurous and culturally educational.

You will spend a night at a teahouse in Dingboche.

Day 6: Acclimatization Day at Dingboche With a Brief Day Hike to Chhukung

Finally, again, you will be able to acclimatize at Dingboche. The scenery around your teahouse will be even better than it will be in the initial days of your trekking. When you’re resting in your teahouse or simply roaming outside it while acclimatizing, you will be able to soak in the beauty that lies within the rugged nature of the Khumbu region in Nepal.

The trekkers also have a choice to go on a short day hike to Chhukung, another landmark there, which is very close to Dingboche. Upon completion of the hike, you will return to Dingboche and spend the night again in a teahouse.

Day 7: Trek From Dingboche to Lobuche

Trekkers will start moving to Lobuche. This day will mark one coming closer to their end destination. Lobuche is in a more rural region of the Everest area. You will find yourself immersed in the beauty of the trails.

If you’re not there during the peak seasons, there might be a necessity for extra caution in every step you take, especially while going to Lobuche, since it is at a higher altitude than other locations you will have covered before.

Day 8: Trek From Lobuche to Gorak Shep, Trek to Everest Base Camp And/Or Kala Patthar

Trekking from Lobuche to Gorak Shep is going to be an adventure in itself. If you didn’t know, Gorak Shep is also the last village in the Everest region. Therefore, you won’t find a place to stay anywhere around the area besides this location.

For those looking to trek during off seasons, there is a likelihood of even the limited teahouses being closed during those times. Other than that, you will get all the facilities you can ask for in the village.

From Gorak Shep, you will head towards the final destination of your journey, the Everest Base Camp, and if you want to explore more, then an even higher destination at Kala Patthar. After completion of your trek for the day, you will have to return to Gorak Shep because there are no teahouses in the Everest Base Camp area and trekkers are not allowed to camp there either.

Day 9: Trek From Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar And Towards Pheriche

If you have not completed your trek from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar on the previous day, then you can go there directly on the ninth day of your trek and it is quite a difficult day in Everest trek that other days. You can then directly descend from Kala Patthar to Pheriche. You will spend a night in the latter location.

Day 10: Trek From Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

From Pheriche, you will again return to Namche Bazaar. This time, you can stroll around the market while making yourself more comfortable with the lower altitude while having finished a rather challenging yet amazing journey to Everest Base Camp with your trek group! You will spend your night at Namche Bazaar again.

Day 11: Trek From Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Your Everest Base Camp Group Trek will finally end on the eleventh day of your journey. You will move from Namche Bazaar to Lukla by trekking downwards. Since you are not ascending, your descent will take less time, which means you won’t have to stop by any other location in between.

You will spend the night at a teahouse in Lukla.

Day 12: Fly/Drive From Lukla to Kathmandu

Lastly, on the twelfth day, you will be able to drive or fly back to Kathmandu. The means of transportation to return to the capital city can be as per your choice. Flights will take a shorter time and road trips will take a few more hours.

The night at the end of your Everest Base Camp Group Trek will be spent rather comfortably and with much more amenities at a hotel in Kathmandu. You will, at last, also be able to reflect on your journey and reminisce about the sweet memories of your trek with your fellow group members.

How Challenging Is The Everest Base Camp Group Trek?

A common question among many who have not gone to the Everest Base Camp privately or with a group or at all might be the possible challenge they may face on the way. There are several challenges that you may face on your way to the base camp.

However, these challenges can be overcome better in a group because you will have lots of trekkers and even a few guides around you who would provide support in times of need. When you opt for certain methods of solving the possible challenges, your trek will surely be easier.

The challenges may include altitude sickness, hardships to keep walking through the trails even when tired, catching up with fellow trekkers, and keeping an unshaken and resilient mentality.
The solutions can be put forward while preparing for the journey or when you are readying up for the trek.

Consulting with experienced trekkers, fellow trekkers, and guides, conversing with locals, and doing thorough research through different websites and journals online, magazines, and testimonials about the same trip from other trekkers can also help.

Preparing For Everest Base Camp Group Trek

There are several ways for a trekker to prepare for the Everest Base Camp Group Trek. Most of the preparation methods are generic and easy. Therefore, you won’t face many problems during preparation. This, however, does not mean that you work independently and not rely on the help of an expert.

The following can work as a guideline for a trekker and will apply to all, regardless of their experience in trekking:

Physical Preparation

A preparation that is talked about a lot but works just as many miracles for a trekker is physical preparation. You need to train your body adequately before you finally become able to trek lengths around the Himalayan region of Khumbu.

Everest Base Camp is not an easy destination to conquer. Agility and resilience go hand in hand during the entire journey. A person who is physically incapable after a few days of trekking might be forced to return home.

When you push your physical limits only when you are trekking, that’s where you go entirely wrong. Hence, pushing your limits sufficiently, also, is only impossible when you have trained yourself for the same. Cardio, jogging, aerobics, running, trekking to locations that take you more than a week, etc. can help effectively.

Mental Preparation

Physical preparation might seem more important but preparing yourself mentally can be just as necessary. If you have a strong body but a weak mind, then there is no way you will succeed on your feat.

On the other hand, when a person is strong mentally, he will push his limits physically as well. Doing proper research and being ready beforehand for all the challenges that may come your way in the near future can help a lot.

Trekkers should not keep any kind of fear in their minds. A brave mindset can move mountains, and quite literally in the case of a trekker heading towards the Everest Base Camp with his group.

Selecting The Right Trekking Agency

Selection of the best can either make or break your trekking journey. You cannot rely on agencies that are going to promise you the best while delivering nothing that matches their promise from before.

What you need to go through before you choose the right trekking agency are:

● Experience Span: You cannot rely on a company that does not have adequate years of experience in the field. The Everest Base Camp Group Trek is a risky one. There won’t be a point in trekking with an amateur agency if you are looking to stay safe and enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

● Collaborativeness: If the trekking agency you have been seeking is not attentive to your calls, texts, or emails, then you can check them off your list of potential agencies. Only choose the agency that will be at your service as per your liking at almost any time of the day.

● Testimonials: The testimonials of a trekking company say a lot about them. Check whether these reviews are trustworthy and real or not. You can also get in touch with the trekkers who have gone to the Everest Base Camp Trek with the company before.

● Safety rules: A trekking company is almost entirely liable for their customer’s safety. Hence, your trekking company must have a proper set of safety rules which, when asked, must be delivered to the trekkers in a way they understand. If you are satisfied with their ways, then you can move forward to the next step.

● Group suitability: You also need to consider how suitable the trekking agency may be for group trekking. If they specialize in group trekking and have records of successful treks as such, then you can consider them, otherwise, not.

Finding the best trekking agency in Nepal can be a chore. Don’t worry; you can stop your search right here. At Above The Himalayas, we offer everything a trekker deserves. There won’t be a compromise in the quality you’ll be getting.

Whether it is going through the best routes, associating with the best guides, or having the journey of a lifetime at the best price, you will get it all with us. Moreover, we have years of experience in providing services par excellence that has put us at the top of the trekking industry.

Packing Properly

What you take to your trek can give you convenience or take convenience from you. Carrying luggage with you on a journey to Everest Base Camp does not mean you have to carry the world with you. Over-carrying can often lead to more challenges than not.

Similarly, when you carry less than necessary, then you will suffer just as much. In a trek, normally, fellow trekkers will not be willing to share their personal belongings or equipment with you because there aren’t many places they can repurchase it. Further, there is a chance that they won’t carry more than what they need.

To avoid the problem of overpacking or underpacking, we have made a list for you to consider:

● Down Jacket
● Trekking shoes (Broken Down)
● Sneakers
● Slippers
● Shawls/Scarves
● Double-layered/ Single layered gloves
● Trekking socks
● Thermal tops and bottoms to wear inside.
● Sweater
● Thinner windproof jackets
● Cotton undergarments
● Trekking poles
● Headlight
● Ropes (may not be necessary)
● Water bottles and water-purifying tablets
● Miscellaneous (extra money, ATM cards, camera, books, journals, etc.)
● Toiletries (Sanitary pad, tissue paper, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, body wash, deodorant, etc.)
● Trekking permits and necessary tickets

Choosing The Best Time Of The Year For Everest Base Camp Group Trek

When you are cautious about every possible aspect of the journey, you should not compromise on selecting the best time of the year to go for the journey. Everest Base Camp Trek in a group can be challenging when you make a mistake in choice.

A group member’s wrong decision will affect not only his own but the trekking experience of his entire group. Therefore, making a choice of season for the trek is very crucial. There are two types of seasons for trekking, off seasons and peak seasons.

The following are all you need to know about the different seasons for trekking to Everest Base Camp in a group:

Peak Seasons (Fall And Spring)

Fall and spring are considered the peak seasons for Everest Base Camp Group Treks. These are the seasons when you can find yourself immersed in the adventure along with the beauty of the surroundings throughout your trek.

Fall and spring are two such seasons when you get the most amazing view of the landscapes and even the mountains. The air is pleasant and the weather is neither too cold nor too hot. Hence, it is suitable for successful trekking journeys.

Even a beginner can find it easy to trek during these months. Due to the refreshing nature of the seasons, trekkers won’t find it hard to ascend or descend even the toughest trails. Going there with a group can be all the more refreshing as you can interact with other members with joy in your journey.

Since there are several other trekking groups or individuals who visit the destination during the peak seasons, you are least likely to be the only one there. This also brings forth an opportunity for the trekkers to interact with one another and build a network of minds alike.

A photographer can most benefit by going to the Everest Base Camp Group Trek during peak seasons. There is no better time of the year than fall or spring to capture the most beautiful glimpses of the mountains, Sherpa villages, and the terrains.

Unfortunately, if you are not cautious enough beforehand, the peak seasons may leave you with lesser accommodation along with other amenities. Because the trails as well as the facilities are crowded, you may miss out on what you could otherwise get if you are not quick in decision making.

Relying on a good trekking agency, whatever, can solve this issue.

Off Seasons (Summer, Monsoon, And Winter)

The off seasons may be considered, if not worse, less preferable in comparison to the peak seasons, especially when you’re trekking with a group. There are several concerns with relation to your safety and convenience when you are going there during the off-season.

Summer, monsoon, and even winter can leave a trekker traumatized if he has not been trained in trekking to a location like Everest Base Camp before. And, there are just as many dangers associated with these seasons.

Trekking through extremely hot pathways can be no less than a nightmare. Since the trails to Everest Base Camp are at a rather high altitude, you are going to find yourself hot and heavy as you keep ascending.

Likewise, monsoon season is the least preferable for trekking to Everest Base Camp because the trails are muddy and slippery. There is a big chance that the trekkers will slip and meet with an unforeseen accident when they go there during monsoon.

Winter, similarly, may seem like a more convenient time of the year to have the Everest Base Camp Group Trek, but that would be entirely a false assumption to make. Though the peaks are all frozen with snow, and the view may be exciting, you won’t get a good view because of the fog and the extreme cold conditions in the mountain. Plus, there is a higher chance of avalanches.

The trails during the winter time, just like the monsoon, can also be extremely dangerous as you head upwards to the main destination where snow glaciers are more and heavier. That’s why natural accidents are very common during the off-season.

While many amenities are not going to be available during these seasons, those that are available will be made so for a cheaper price than you would pay during peak seasons. But this advantage really does not make up for the dangers that each of the off-seasons holds.

How Can A Trekker Ensure Successful Everest Base Camp Group Trek?

If you are trekking to the world’s most prominent trekking destination, then it is a must for you to ensure that you are successful in the pursuit. There are several ways a successful Everest Base Camp Group Trek can be guaranteed.

The following are some such ways:

Stay In The Right Group

Choose a group that matches your level of training as a trekker. When you choose a group of trekkers that are either too experienced or lesser thereof, you will find yourself in a difficult situation by the end of the trek. Chances are, someone else’s situation may lead to a hassle in your journey.

Selecting a group that cannot only relate to you skills-wise but also has people with similar mindsets and experiences to you, then you can make the best out of your journey.

Drink Water And Eat Well

You cannot rely on your own body and mind even if you have trained yourself properly if you are not fueled adequately. Staying hydrated throughout the journey is important. Make sure to carry a water bottle that at least carries water of a liter or more. Carry several water-purifying tablets so that you can get refills on your way without having to risk your health.

Carrying light snacks like dry fruits or snack bars can also help you stay energized throughout your trek. Don’t eat too much or too little when you are in a teahouse or an eatery in between your treks. Eating the right portion of meals can help you in a successful Everest Base Camp Trek.

Communicate

Communication must be a norm for all the group members. When you don’t interact with your group members, not only can you avoid bonding but you may even find yourself amid silent conflicts.

Embrace Flexibility And Work In A Group

Everest Base Camp Group Trek is all about fostering connections and aiming at common success in a group. Therefore, be sure to remain flexible as and when necessary. An individualistic mindset does not work when you are in a group. Be open to new ideas and exchanges.

Be Respectful

Respecting your group members and the traditions of the place you’re traveling is very important. This counts in learning the ethics of a particular location. When you are respectful to the people around you, you will get it back which further helps you to enhance your experience in the Everest Base Camp Trek.

Conclusion

The Everest Base Camp Group Trek is the perfect trek you would want to go for if you are an adventurer. From nature to diverse cultures, there is nothing that this trek will not give you the fullest experience of. Trekkers must keep in mind all that we have mentioned in this article to ensure that they spend the best possible in the ever-alluring Himalayas.
