Overview of Short Everest Base Camp Trek – 10 Days
The Short Everest Base Camp Trek is a 10 Days journey through the major trail of the Khumbu region of Nepal and will take you to the base of the Mount Everest in a carefully planned 10 day trip. Our journey will start with a flight to Lukla and proceed along the path of Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep. Gorak Shep is the overnight base for the excursions to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar before we begin our descent.
This trek suits travelers who have limited time but still want to experience the main Everest Base Camp route. The trip will include a complete acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar where your body will be able to acclimatize before we move to the higher altitudes. This is a compressed 10 day Everest base camp trek itinerary and is more physically demanding than a standard 12 to 14 day itinerary. It is more appropriate to trekkers who are prepared to spend many days on long walks and at elevated altitudes. The trail starts at Lukla at around 2,860 meters up to the Everest Base Camp at around 5,364 meters and Kala Patthar at around 5,545 meters.
The Short Everest Base Camp Trekking will involve walking through Sherpa villages, suspension bridges, prayer wheels and mani walls and significant Buddhist sites. Namche Bazaar also allows you to explore the largest settlement of Khumbu region and Tengboche takes us to the well-known Tengboche Monastery. The path is then made more silent and more challenging as we proceed to Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep.
The uphill part needs a slow speed and reasonable rest. Our guide will keep an eye on your status and assist you to react adequately in case you acquire the signs of altitude illness. Fitness will certainly aid in coping with the physical challenge, however, fitness does not include prevention of altitude sickness.
The trip is completed with a long walk back to Namche and a scheduled flight back to Kathmandu. Weather and airline operations can affect mountain flights, so we will not promise a fixed flight time. In case you want to come back faster, we can offer you an optional helicopter service.
Above the Himalaya is concerned with effective planning, effective communication and individual support during the trip. We will describe the short Everest base camp trek route of each day, keep you at a comfortable pace, and assist in the arrangements required to complete your trek. The short EBC trek gives you a focused way to experience the Everest region while keeping the itinerary within a limited travel period.
Route Overview of Short Everest Base Camp Trek
The short Everest base camp trek follows the main Everest Base Camp trail through the Khumbu region. Our trek will start at Lukla and we will gradually ascend as we move through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep. We then proceed to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar before we embark on our way down to Namche and Lukla.
Day 3 will involve a complete acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar. This will give us time to relax, see what is around us and to give the body time to acclimatize before we move on to the higher grounds. After Namche, the trail becomes progressively more demanding, so we will keep a steady pace and take regular breaks.

Who should not choose the short Everest base camp trek?

In case you already have a medical condition or you are worried about high altitude, consult with a professional medical practitioner before booking. The daily route and the altitude gains will be explained by our team, as well, so that you can make an informed decision on whether this short Everest base camp trek itinerary fits you.
Itinerary of Short Everest Base Camp Trek – 10 Days
01
Day 01: Fly to Lukla and Trek to Phakding
We will take a morning flight from Kathmandu or Ramechhap to Lukla, depending on the current flight schedule. On arrival at Lukla, short Everest base camp trekking journey starts with a slow climb over small mountain villages and forested areas of the Dudh Koshi Valley. The trail passes through several villages before reaching Phakding, where we will spend our first night.
This first day gives you time to settle into the mountain environment before the trail becomes more demanding. Our team will check your equipment and explain the plan for the following days after we reach the lodge.
02
Day 02: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
We will take the Dudh Koshi Valley after breakfast on our way to Namche Bazaar. The route goes through various suspension bridges and through small settlements and then it reaches Sagarmatha National Park. As we continue uphill, the landscape changes and the trail becomes more demanding.
We will cross the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge before making the final climb toward Namche Bazaar. The ascent may be exhausting since we will ascend to a significant height today, so we will have a slow pace and rest when necessary. Namche is the main trading center in the Khumbu region, and we will spend the night here before our acclimatization day.
Day : Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar
Today we will remain at Namche Bazaar to give your body time to acclimatise to the rising altitude. Instead of spending the whole day in the lodge we suggest a walk around the area. You can visit Namche, go to the local market and walk towards the Syangboche area then come back to the lodge.
We will maintain a relaxed speed and not undue effort. You also have time this day to check your gear, take a good rest and prepare to take on the more challenging sections of the short Everest base camp trekking trail. Our guide will discuss the signs of altitude illness, and will request you to report any unusual headache, nausea, dizziness or difficulty with breathing.
04
Day 04: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
After a breakfast we will leave Namche Bazaar and walk up along the trail along the hillside with a view of the Khumbu peaks. The trail goes across small villages and wooded areas until the calmer environment of Tengboche. There will be a number of slow ascents and descents which we will pass on the way, and a slow pace will render the walk easier.
Tengboche sits at about 3,867 m and is home to the famous Tengboche Monastery. After reaching the village, we will have time to explore the monastery and its surroundings if conditions and opening times allow. There is also a view of Ama Dablam and other peaks in the area. We will spend the night at a local lodge in Tengboche.
05
Day 05: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche
It takes the path through the forest, crosses the Imja Khola, and slowly ascends to the elevated quarters of the Khumbu Valley. We will go through Pangboche and proceed to Dingboche and you would get a glimpse of Ama Dablam and other mountains on the way.
The higher we go, the more open is the landscape and vegetation is less dense. Dingboche is at approximately 4,410 m and is a significant resting place before we proceed to Lobuche. We will rest and warm ourselves in the evening and prepare to the higher part of the short Everest base camp trek.
06
Day 06: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche
Today we will continue toward the higher section of the Everest Base Camp trail. The route climbs gradually from Dingboche and passes through open mountain terrain toward Dughla. Beyond Dughla, the path becomes steeper as it goes up to the ridge where there are memorials to climbers and guides who have perished on Everest and other Himalayan summits.
And there we will go on to Lobuche, which is approximately at 4,910 m. The fact that it is a shorter distance does not imply that the day is easy since the altitude increases the difficulty of even moderate ascents. Our team will maintain the speed at a regular level and give enough rest and hydration time before we get to the lodge.
07
Day 07: Trek from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp and Gorak Shep
We will start early from Lobuche and follow the trail toward Gorak Shep. The path has rocky and glacial formations and as the altitude keeps on rising, the walk becomes more challenging. After reaching Gorak Shep, we will leave our heavier belongings at the lodge and continue toward Everest Base Camp with a lighter daypack.
This route is along the Khumbu Glacier and leads us to the Everest Base Camp region. Base Camp looks different depending on the season and activity of the expedition but the landscape of the glaciers and mountains around is still impressive. We will retrace the path to Gorak Shep and spend the night there after spending some time in the site. We will keep the pace steady throughout this long day and take breaks as needed.
08
Day 08: Kala Patthar Sunrise and Trek to Pheriche
We will get up early and start climbing Kala Patthar before the sun rises. The path ascends steadily along a rocky path, and this part is difficult because of the thin air. On the perspective, we are able to have panoramic views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and the other mountains around the area under the conditions of clear weather. We will have breakfast back at Gorak Shep after a few hours of having the viewpoint.
We will then proceed to go down the main Everest Base Camp trail to Lobuche and Dughla and then to Pheriche. The downhill provides your body with a bit of relief after ascending to a high altitude even though it still entails a few hours of walking. Pheriche has an elevation of approximately 4,371 m and is a more comfortable rest after the high altitude segment.
09
Day 09: Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar
After Breakfast, we will go back to the Khumbu Valley. The path leads us through Dughla, and repeated to the lower settlements, thence to Tengboche. We will go through woods and open ground, steadily descending in altitude.
The route out of Tengboche goes up to the same old road which leads to Namche Bazaar. Although we are descending overall, this day still includes several uphill sections, so we will maintain a steady pace and take breaks when needed. Namche is another significant landmark on our way back and you can have a more relaxed evening in town after a few hard days on the high altitudes.
10
Day 10: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla and Fly to Kathmandu
We will begin our final trekking day after breakfast and follow the trail toward Lukla. The trail goes down the Dudh Koshi Valley and then through Phakding and other well-known villages until we arrive at Lukla. This is a long walking day, so we will start early and maintain a comfortable pace.
After reaching Lukla, we will check in for the scheduled flight to Kathmandu. Mountain flights may vary due to the weather and airline schedule, thus the exact departure time may differ. If the flight operates as scheduled, we will fly to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel or onward destination.
If weather or operational conditions delay the flight, our team will assist you according to the available arrangements. We recommend allowing sufficient contingency time before booking an international flight or other time sensitive travel from Kathmandu.

How challenging is the 10 days short Everest base camp trek?
The 10 days Everest base camp trek is a challenging high altitude journey. Mostly, trekking days will take you 5 to 9 hours, and the paths will be rocky, uphill and downhill, with irregular terrain. The path goes above 5,000 meters where the air is thinner and walking is more challenging.
Namche Bazaar Day 3 of the short Everest base camp trek will allow us time to acclimatize before we move on to Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep. No technical climbing experience is required, although you ought to be ready to walk several hours in successive days.
Good fitness helps you to handle the physical workload, yet does not prevents altitude sickness. Our guide will moniter your condition and change the plan in case your health needs it.
Weather & Best Seasons for Short EBC Trekking
The Everest Base Camp trekking path is possible throughout most of the year, but with each season, there are new trail and weather conditions. The most favorable conditions are typically in spring and autumn when the sky is clear, the daytime temperature is pleasant, and the mountain can be seen well. They are also seasons that bring more trekkers particularly on the core parts of the EBC route.
The spring season is between March and May. In higher elevation still March and May months have cold mornings, while April and May generally have warmer days. The routes are busy, with the peak trekking season. May can also see increased activity around Everest Base Camp as Everest summiters prepare for their spring climbing season.
Autumn is between September and November. September is the month with the possibility of some rainfall after monsoon, and October and November are the months usually clear with dry weather. There are usually large trekker numbers in October and thus lodges and trails will be busy.
Winter from December to February brings very cold conditions, particularly around Lobuche, Gorak Shep, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar. The higher parts of the EBC trail may be impacted by the snow and the freezing conditions. However with the right gear and good experience, experienced trekkers can do the short trek to Everest base camp during this time.
The monsoon season from June to August brings more cloud and rainfall to the lower Khumbu. So the EBC trekking trails may also be influenced by rain and also lead to flight delays. The upper sections of the road are generally drier than the lower valleys, yet the visibility may be low.
| Season | Months | General Conditions | Trekking Consideration |
| Spring | March to May | Mild lower valleys and generally clear conditions | Good mountain visibility and busy trails |
| Summer / Monsoon | June to August | Rain, cloud, and variable visibility | Flight and trail conditions can become less predictable |
| Autumn | September to November | Generally dry with clear mountain views | Excellent conditions but higher visitor numbers |
| Winter | December to February | Cold with possible snow at higher elevations | Suitable for prepared trekkers comfortable with cold |
Weather in the Everest region can change quickly at any time of year. We suggest that you select your trekking season based on the balance of weather, trail conditions, temperature, and visitors that you would prefer for your short Everest base camp trekking journey.
Food and Accommodations during the EBC trek
During the short Everest base camp trek (10 days ), we will stay in local teahouses and mountain lodges. Beds and mattresses are typically found in rooms, and shared bathrooms are more prevalent in the higher elevations. Hot showers, WiFi, and charging are an extra option in some lodges.
We suggest that you should bring an appropriate sleeping bag since it may get very cold at the higher altitudes. Teahouses may provide blankets, but you should not rely on them as your only source of warmth.
Food tends to consist of dal bhat, rice, noodles, soups, momos, potatoes, eggs, pasta, and vegetables. Food choices can become more limited at higher elevations, although common teahouse meals are generally available. The short Everest base camp trek package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the days of the trek. On longer walking days, we suggest having some personal snacks.
Altitude Sickness: Staying Safe Above 3,000 m
At elevations above approximately 3,000 m, reduced oxygen availability increases the risk of altitude illness. The typical symptoms are headache, nausea, dizziness, uncharacteristic tiredness, and insomnia. The Namche Bazaar (Day 3) will allow us ample time to acclimatize, and then move on to higher grounds.
To minimize unwarranted altitude straining:
- Walk slowly and comfortably
- Consume fluids as often as you feel like based on thirst and activity level
- Eat normal meals and have adequate carbohydrates and calories
- Do not consume alcohol at elevated altitude
- Report any symptoms to your guide immediately
- Stop climbing in case of severe or aggravation of symptoms
- Follow your guide’s instructions if you need to descend
Symptoms such as confusion, difficulty walking, severe breathlessness, or worsening altitude illness require immediate attention and descent to a lower altitude. In case you are taking acetazolamide or another altitude illness drug, talk to a qualified medical person before going out on a trek.
Our team will carry the first aid equipment that the company confirms as part of its standard trekking operation. In severe cases, emergency evacuation can be required, and it should depend on the weather, location, availability of aircraft, and other operational factors.
Training & preparation before short EBC trek (10 days) journey
The short Everest base camp trek is recommended with proper preparation since some days are spent walking long distances at high altitude. We recommend beginning your preparation around eight weeks before departure and gradually building your walking stamina and strength.
Recommended 8 weeks training plan for the short Everest base camp trekking
- Week 1–2: Walking every day, about 5 km, and work on your basic endurance and leg strength.
- Weeks 3-4: Incorporate stair climbing, hill walking, or treadmill incline activities to train on long uphill parts.
- Weeks 5–6: Start backpack training using a moderate load during hikes or stair sessions and gradually increase the load. Raise the load slowly instead of having a heavy pack on.
- Weeks 7–8: Include longer hikes of around 10 km or more, preferably on varied terrain. Include a longer walk on the weekend and increase the walking time over time.
Along with walking and hiking, include simple strength exercises for your legs and core. Before leaving, as much as possible, do at least one longer hike per week. You should also take time to rest between the hard sessions and not to begin an intensive new training program just before travelling.
The Everest base camp short trek does not require any technical climbing skills, but you must be able to walk several hours on uneven ground. Proper preparation will assist you cope with the physical conditions of the road, yet fitness is not going to prevent altitude sickness.
Nepal Visa, Everest Permits & Requirements
Most eligible foreign travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. The current tourist visa charges are USD 30 (15 days), USD 50 (30 days), and USD 125 (90 days). Visa regulations and money transfer plans may vary, and verify the most current data provided by the Department of Immigration prior to travelling.
Permits Required
In the case of the Everest Base Camp route, the requirements are as follows:
- Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: NPR 3,000 for foreign visitors.
- TIMS Card: According to the existing Nepal Tourism Board regulations, TIMS is applied to Everest Base Camp trekkers who have an authorised guide with a registered trekking agency.
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Trek Card: The local government currently lists NPR 3,000 for travelers from countries other than SAARC countries and China.
The trekking documentation and permit will be organized by our team on short Everest base camp trek package and will be explained to you by our team before the departure. Permit fees and regulations can change, so we will follow the requirements in effect at the time of your trek.
Staying healthy & safe on the trail
To remain healthy in the short Everest base camp trek, it is necessary to think of food, water, hygiene, sun protection, and altitude. During the trek, we suggest drinking boiled, filtered, treated or bottled water and regular meals to keep your energy levels high. Avoid untreated water from streams or taps, even when it looks clean.
As we ascend the mountain, the sun will intensify, so bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm. Warm clothes are also significant since the temperatures may drop fast, especially in the mornings and evenings. A suitable sleeping bag will help you stay warm during the higher nights.
Lodges offer simple facilities, and services generally become more limited as we approach Lobuche and Gorak Shep. Bring along hand sanitizer and keep good personal hygiene during the trip. Trekking poles can also provide better balance and stability on rocky and uneven sections of the trail.
Our guide will provide practical support throughout the trek, but you should inform the guide promptly if you feel unwell. In case you experience severe or progressive signs of altitude illness, our guide will assess your condition and may advise you to descend to a lower elevation.
Flights, Drives & Trail Transportation
Most trekkers fly to Lukla to begin the Everest Base Camp route. Flights can operate from either Kathmandu or Ramechhap, depending on the current airline schedule. If your flight scheduled from Ramechhap, our team will provide the necessary road transport to Ramechhap from Kathmandu at the agreed schedule.
The flight to Lukla usually takes around 30 minutes, but mountain weather can cause delays or cancellations. Your departure airport and flight arrangements will be confirmed before the trek, although we cannot guarantee a fixed flight time.
The regular itinerary uses a scheduled flight to Lukla at the beginning of the trek and a scheduled flight from Lukla to Kathmandu at the end. On the final day, we will trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla before taking the scheduled flight to Kathmandu. Helicopter transportation is not mandatory, and it will be assessed based on the weather, availability of flight, and operational conditions.
Travel Insurance and Emergency Evacuation during short Everest base camp trek
The short EBC trek is highly advised to have travel insurance, since the path is at high elevation and traverses isolated mountainous terrain. Select a high altitude trekking, emergency medical and evacuation policy that includes helicopter evacuation where the policy also provides this coverage.
The existence of emergency evacuation is based on various factors such as the weather, visibility, the availability of flight, and the position of the trekker. We therefore cannot guarantee immediate helicopter service. In case of any serious symptoms or injury, inform our guide immediately to coordinate necessary aid.
Before travelling, check your insurance policy carefully and confirm that it covers the maximum altitude of this short Everest base camp trek itinerary. Having your policy details and contact in case of an emergency is important to have with you throughout the trip.
Alternative routes to Everest base camp
Everest region has various trekking paths in addition to the normal Base Camp path. The correct choice is based on your time available, experience of trekking, the level you want to go to, and whether you want to explore various areas of Khumbu.
- Classic Everest Base Camp Trek: A more extended itinerary with more time to acclimatize and slower walking pace.
- Everest and Gokyo Lake Trek: It is the combination of Everest base camp, Gokyo valley and mountain lakes.
- Jiri or Shivalaya Route: Includes a few extra trekking days prior to the main Everest trail and offers a more extended route to the Khumbu.
- Three Passes Trek: Goes over three high mountain passes and is appropriate to experienced trekkers seeking a more challenging route.
- Everest View Trek: A short version that looks more at the Sherpa villages, monasteries and mountain vistas without going to the base camp of Everest.
- EBC Helicopter Return: This is the same way as the main Everest Base Camp route but then an optional helicopter is used in the second part of the trip, depending on the availability and weather.
Our 10 days Everest base camp trek focuses on the main route and gives travelers with opportunity to reach Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
Language and Communication on the Everest base camp trekking trail
The principal language throughout Nepal is Nepali, and a large percentage of the people in the Khumbu region speak Sherpa language, which is a close relative of Tibetan. The lodge employees and other guides who deal with international trekkers usually understand English particularly in larger towns like Namche Bazaar.
To complete the trek, you do not have to speak Nepali or Sherpa. Our guide will assist in the communication at lodges, restaurants, checkpoints and other locations on the trail. Namaste and Dhanyabad are simple greetings that can be used when meeting local people, and Tashi Delek is a common greeting among Tibetans and Sherpas.
It is easier to communicate with, when you talk clearly and gradually. You can also learn some words in the local languages, which will allow you to relate well with the societies you come across.
Festivals along the trekking trail
The Everest region follows Tibetan Buddhist traditions, and several festivals take place in the Khumbu. Exact dates change each year according to the lunar calendar.
- Tengboche Mani Rimdu: This is one of the major Buddhist festivals at the Tengboche Monastery, which involve prayers, rituals, and traditional masked dances. The festival normally takes place during the autumn season, but the exact dates vary each year.
- Losar: Sherpa and Tibetan New Year typically occurs in January or February. Some of the villages may have prayer flags, family meetings, and cultural events.
- Saga Dawa: A Buddhist festival that usually happens in May or June and has some religious meaning to the Buddhist people.
- Local monastery ceremonies: Smaller religious ceremonies and pujas may take place at monasteries and villages during different times of the year.
If your trek coincides with a major festival, you may see additional cultural activities along the short Everest base camp trekking route. It is also possible that popular festival times can boost demand on accommodation and thus our team will take into consideration the dates when planning your trek.
Most Difficult Day of the short Everest base camp trek
Day 8, from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar and down to Pheriche, is likely to feel like the toughest day of the short Everest base camp trek itinerary. The day begins early and has a sharp climb up to Kala Patthar of approximately 5,545 meters. The climb may be physically challenging due to the high altitude, cold morning temperatures and rocky trail.
Once we have the viewpoint we will go back to Gorak Shep to have a breakfast before moving down the main trail to Lobuche, Dughla and Pheriche. The long down provides your body with relief of the highest heights, and the overall time walking makes this a strenuous day.
Start gradually, use trekking poles if they help you, maintain a balanced diet, and take regular rest breaks. Tell your guide if you feel unwell at any point. Previous acclimatization helps your body adjust, but it does not eliminate the risk of altitude sickness.
Weather at each overnight stop
As we ascend, weather changes greatly and you should be prepared to experience mild weather in the lower valleys and freezing weather in the higher altitudes. In general, Kathmandu and Lukla are mild and Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep are increasingly colder.
| Location | Altitude | Typical Conditions |
| Kathmandu | 1,400 m | Mild to warm, depending on season |
| Lukla | 2,860 m | Cool days and chilly nights |
| Phakding | 2,610 m | Similar to Lukla, with generally mild daytime conditions |
| Namche Bazaar | 3,440 m | Cool days and cold nights |
| Tengboche | 3,867 m | Colder conditions, especially after sunset |
| Dingboche | 4,410 m | Cold and dry, with freezing nights |
| Lobuche | 4,910 m | Alpine conditions with very cold nights |
| Gorak Shep | 5,164 m | Very cold, with temperatures often below freezing |
| Kala Patthar | 5,545 m | Freezing conditions, especially before sunrise |
Monsoon brings more rain and cloud to the lower sections, while winter brings much colder conditions at higher elevations. We recommend packing layered clothing, a warm down jacket, gloves, a hat, and a waterproof outer layer.
Internet, Charging & Mobile Signal Guide
The Everest base camp trek route has mobile connectivity in most of the villages, but signal strength depends on the location and terrain. Nepal Telecom and Ncell have coverage in some of the major settlements with Namche usually having a stronger connection than the higher areas. Signal may also become unreliable as we go towards Lobuche and Gorak Shep.
Numerous teahouses offer WiFi services at an extra fee, although the connection speed might be insufficient and slow down during periods of high use by trekkers. Most lodges have charging facilities also, especially in larger villages, which is typically charged as an extra fee.
We suggest that a power bank is carried with you and having important documents and maps offline. Do not depend entirely on mobile service during the trek, as coverage can disappear temporarily on some sections of the short Everest base camp trekking trail.
Luxury Upgrade Options during short Everest base camp trek
The classic trek involves the use of local teahouses but we can also negotiate more luxurious accommodation and transportation needs where possible.
- Everest View Hotel: You may upgrade your stay to the Everest View Hotel near Syangboche at an additional cost, subject to room availability and itinerary arrangements.
- Luxury Lodges: Selected lower and mid altitude sections of the route that have more comfortable lodges with better rooms and additional facilities. Availability varies by location and season.
- Private Helicopter: A personal helicopter can offer an optional departure of the Everest region, which depends on weather, availability, and operational conditions. It is not part of the standard itinerary.
- Kathmandu Hotel Upgrade: You can upgrade your Kathmandu accommodation to a higher category hotel before or after the trek.
There is an extra charge on these upgrades and our team will verify availability and charges and only then make arrangements.
Seasonal crowds guide on EBC trekking route
Everest sees different visitor levels throughout the year. Trekking activity is normally highest in spring and autumn because these seasons usually offer good visibility and more stable trekking conditions. The main trail is especially busy in April, May, October and November, mainly around Namche Bazaar and other popular places to stay overnight.
| Month | Crowd Level | General Pattern |
| March | Medium | Spring season begins |
| April | High | Busy spring period |
| May | High | Continued spring trekking |
| June | Low | Monsoon conditions begin |
| July | Low | Rain and cloud reduce visitor numbers |
| August | Low | Monsoon continues |
| September | Medium to High | Autumn season begins |
| October | Very High | Peak autumn period |
| November | High | Good conditions with fewer visitors than October |
| December | Low to Medium | Winter conditions begin |
| January | Low | Cold conditions and fewer trekkers |
| February | Low to Medium | Winter gradually starts to ease |
April, May, October, and November are typically busier months, whereas June, August, and the rest are usually less. These are the general seasonal trends but not the set levels of the crowd size since the number of visitors may change over time.
What should you do in case Lukla flights are cancelled?
The flights to Lukla are subject to weather and conditions of the mountain operations and therefore delays or cancellations may occur. In case of any changes in your booked flight, our team will assist you in the review of the available options and make the necessary changes to the travel plans.
- Wait and reschedule the flight: It is possible to rebook the flight when the airline offers the opportunity.
- Ramechhap option: Based on the existing flight schedule, we can also consider Ramechhap as an option airport, and then proceed to transfer by road.
- Helicopter option: A helicopter can be an alternative in case conditions and availability permit, though helicopters are also subject to weather and visibility.
- Other additional costs: Additional accommodation, meals, road transfers or helicopter services can also introduce additional costs depending on the situation and the terms of booking.
The short Everest base camp trek does not have a promised final trek buffer day. Day 3 serves as the planned acclimatization day. We suggest keeping few flexibility in your overall travel schedule since mountain flights may change at the last minute.
Why short Everest base camp trek costs more than standard Everest base camp trek trek?
A 10 days Everest base camp trek itinerary may at times turn out to be more expensive than a standard trek that is longer since the plan is to fit the same major trekking route in a smaller number of days. This involves close coordination of flights, accommodation, guides, porters and arrangements of daily trekking. The reduced timeframe may also provide less adaptability in case weather or other transportation issues disrupt the plan.
The main factors can include:
- Flight logistics: Lukla flights should be closely coordinated with the trekking schedule, and the alteration of flight operations can influence the overall arrangements.
- Reduced itinerary: The crew must plan accommodation, food, transportation and trekking support on a more limited time scale.
- Guide and porter support: This is a variable cost that depends on the size of the group and the staffing that is provided in the package.
- Weather contingency: Weather cancellations or delays of mountain flights may generate extra accommodation, meals, or transportation costs in the event of itinerary changes.
- Optional helicopter service: A helicopter can significantly increase the total cost if you choose it as an alternative to the regular flight or trekking arrangements.
The final price of short Everest base camp trek depends on the services included, season, group size, transportation, accommodation, and other arrangements included in the package. The same applies to helicopter services. A helicopter cost does not included as part of the 10 days EBC trek itinerary and will be an optional service at an extra cost.
Comparison: short EBC vs standard vs helicopter trek vs luxury trek
The decision between these two Everest trekking choices primarily lies in your available time, the degree of walking you desire, and the degree of comfort. The brief itinerary makes the trip under 10 days, making the walking plan seem more challenging. A typical classic Everest base camp trek is more time consuming and offers a chance to distribute the walking and acclimatization. Helicopter return trek and luxury EBC trek packages are more aimed at minimizing the time of travel or enhancing comfort, depending on the package.
| Feature | Short EBC Trek | Standard EBC Trek | Helicopter Trek | Luxury Everest Trek |
| Duration | 10 days | 12 to 15 days | 10-13 days | 12-16 days |
| Acclimatization | 1 day | 2 days | 2 days | 2-3 days |
| Walking Demand | High | Moderate to high | Lower | Moderate to high |
| Helicopter | Optional | Usually not included | Main transport option | Optional |
| Accommodation | Teahouses | Teahouses | Teahouses or hotels depending on package | Higher category lodges where available |
| Difficulty | Challenging | Challenging | Lower trekking demand | Varies |
| Suitable For | Fit travelers with limited time | Travelers who prefer a slower pace | Travelers prioritizing time savings | Travelers seeking greater comfort |
The Short Everest Base Camp trek is suitable to tourists with limited time, and who are able to cope with longer walking days. The standard alternative is ideal when the traveler wants to have a more relaxed time with more time to acclimatize. A helicopter trek reduces the amount of trekking, while a luxury itinerary focuses more on accommodation and comfort. Availability, services, and helicopter arrangements also depend on the package and our team will make sure that they will get the specifics before booking.
Is sort Everest base camp trek right for you?
| Choose the short EBC trek if you | Choose a longer EBC trek if you |
| Have around 10 days available | Have 14 or more days available |
| Regularly walk, hike, or exercise | Prefer shorter walking days |
| Feel comfortable with a demanding itinerary | Want more time for acclimatization |
| Want to reach Everest Base Camp within a limited timeframe | Are new to high altitude trekking |
| Understand that weather or health can affect the schedule | Prefer a slower and more flexible pace |
The short Everest Base Camp trek is recommended to the travelers that have little time and are well prepared to walk long distances in the mountains. A longer itinerary is perhaps more appropriate to you should you need additional acclimatization or have a less challenging schedule.

Most Asked Questions by Travellers
Yes, 10 days is enough to cover the main Everest Base Camp trek but the schedule demands a high level of physical preparation and a steady pace. We include an acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar and the other trekking days consist of several hours walking at increasing altitude.
If altitude sickness, bad weather or another serious situation is impacting your trek, your safety comes first. Your guide will keep an eye on you and tell you to rest, stop climbing or go down to a lower altitude if necessary.
Yes, if you aren’t feeling well, are fatigued or just don’t want to do the early morning walk, you can skip the Kala Patthar climb. You can go back to Gorak Shep and continue with the planned descent to Pheriche with the party.
No, helicopter transportation is optional and is weather, visibility, aircraft availability and operational condition dependent. Trekking to Lukla is part of our regular itinerary, after which we take the scheduled flight to Kathmandu.
Carry enough Nepalese rupee for personal expenses such as snacks, beverages, WiFi, hot baths, charging and tips. How much is up to you, but it’s a good idea to have some additional cash on hand as payment choices become more limited at higher elevations.
Yes, you can have vegetarian meals at teahouses along the major Everest route. Typical options are dal bhat, veggies, noodles, rice, soups, potatoes, momos and pasta. Please inform our team about any dietary requirements before the trek.
Yes, many teahouses have charging facilities, most of the time for an extra price. Higher elevations may have less available service, so we recommend bringing a power bank and charging your devices whenever you can reliably charge them.
Weather and operating conditions may cause delays. In some cases we might look at the next flight out, other arrangements or a helicopter charter as an option but additional charges may apply.
No, you do not need any previous experience of trekking in Everest. However, be prepared for several hours of trekking on several days and the physical challenges of high altitude.
Bring warm layered clothing, a down jacket, gloves, a warm cap, good trekking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, a sleeping bag, personal medications, and other necessary trekking gear. Depending on the trekking season, your packing requirements may also change.
This depends on your own health and the altitude involved. If you have a medical problem, inform your doctor before the walk and let our team know of any pertinent concerns so that you can prepare accordingly.
The upper sections of the trail can be more difficult in heavy snow and this can also influence flights. If conditions are unsafe, our staff will change the schedule according to the weather and local conditions rather than continuing at unnecessary risk.
Yes, trekking in winter is feasible however at higher altitudes it is quite cold and snow can affect the trail. You will require appropriate cold weather gear and should be prepared for possible adjustments due to mountain conditions.
Travel insurance is highly advised for the short Everest base camp trek. Choose an insurance policy which includes coverage for high altitude trekking, medical care and emergency evacuation including helicopter rescue when needed.
If you have symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual exhaustion, inform your guide immediately. Our guide will assess your condition and may recommend rest or descent to a lower altitude if your symptoms worsen.
You can find mobile coverage and WiFi in a number of towns and villages, however the signal can get poorer at higher elevations. Many teahouses provide WiFi and charge a small price to use it, but the quality is subject to change.
Most teahouses provides blankets, however conditions vary from place to another. We recommend bringing a good sleeping bag, especially for the cold nights at Lobuche and Gorak Shep.
Yes, you can add locations like Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini or adjacent hill areas before or after the journey. Our experts can help arrange suitable extensions to fit around your availability.

Posted on Tripadvisor H H9 December 2025Verified Thank you for the best tour we have ever had! I planned to stay at the Everest View Hotel this time and travel there because I wanted to see Everest, the highest mountain in the world, slowly, but despite the short schedule due to my children's school, all I got was a response that it was difficult to contact several tour companies. The Himaraya Trekking, Above, has worked out a smooth and safe schedule and had the best experience for me and my family. I will never forget the view of Mount Everest. Thank you very much.Posted on Tripadvisor Mike F26 November 2025Verified Another Amazing Trip with Above the Himalaya This is my 3rd trip with Above the Himalaya and Puru. Each trip with Puru has exceeded expectation with the quality of the guides, porters and attention to detail. We were a team of 5 trekker and our ages were all above 67 years of age with the oldest being 73. We are all experienced hikers and trekker and our plan was to trek up the Khumbu Valley to the Cho La pass to Gokyo to the Renjo La pass to return to Lukla. However, the weather altered our plans as Cyclone Montha blanketed the country in rain at lower elevations and significant snowfall at the upper elevations. Due to the weather, no one was trekking and everyone was staying put in their current location during the storm. All the passes were closed due to the deep snow. We were in Namche when the storm was blanketing the country. This is where Above the Himalaya really shines is in the ability to adapt to the changing conditions and our safety. In conversation with our lead guide, we decided to alter our route to trek through the Gokyo valley to reach Gokyo and then do the Renjo La pass. Sitaram our lead guide and Dhurba our assistant guide was both attentive to the changing conditions and always kept a keen eye for how we were doing and feeling on the trek. The pacing was excellent as none of us had any hint of altitude sickness as we reached a maximum elevation of 5,365m.Having trekked and hiked all over the world with different tour companies, Puru’s company is simply the best. The communications, focus on safety, the guides and staff, the accommodations, and the food are all amazing. All you have to do is focus on the beauty of the mountains, enjoy the joyfulness of the Nepali people and have fun exploring the trails. I am planning my next trip with Puru for 2027 as there is no other trekking company to match Puru’s level of service.Posted on Tripadvisor Mie K. A.25 November 2025Verified Take a small step into the Himalayas I went with Above The Himalaya Trekking’s Everest View Hike in November 2025 and can only recommend with my whole heart!I had never visited Nepal or the Himalayas before and had a life long dream of seeing Mt Everest. I had though, hiked a lot in various parts of the world, but never above 2000 m, so I went with the five day Everest View Trek to take a small step and see how I would handle the altitude. From first enquiry about dates and various questions, to my arrival back from the trip, Puru has been an invaluable help, always standby on mail and WhatsApp, pulling strings and making things happen. Also big shout out to the amazing guide I was teamed with, Kamal, who did everything he could to answer all my curious questions about vegetation, animal life, Nepalese culture and everything in-between :) Kamal was the perfect gentleman, offering little treats and reminding me to take breaks, and all in all I felt very safe and in good hands all the time. He also had good banter and jokes, which lifted the spirit of even the hardest climb. It was cold most nights and mornings and even though the tea houses provided heavy blankets (and I could borrow extra) I was glad I had the sleeping bag with me, which I rented through Puru. But I could definitely have survived without and saved the space in my pack.In total, I’m very pleased I’ve got to experience this lovely country with Above the Himalaya Trekking and if I ever come back for the big leap into the mountains, I’ll chose Kamal and Puru all over again :)Posted on Tripadvisor nameless25 November 2025Verified Nepal trek-Gokyo Second trek with Above the Himalaya, this time to Gokyo and over Renjo La. Our lead and assistant guides (Sitaram and Dhurba) were excellent. Due to several days of rain at lower elevations and snow higher we needed to change our plans while in the midst of our trek. Above the Himalaya accomplished this smoothly and flawlessly, which ultimately resulted in a better experience. We’ll be back!Posted on Tripadvisor Yu S22 November 2025Verified Great Experience and Friendly people. We had a great time with Above the Himalayas tour company in Oct. Ajay, the tour guide in Kathmandu is very friendly and knowledgeable. He took us to a lot of places that we can experience local authentic daily life. Puru, the owner, arranged and organized our trip in such way that we really feel comfortable and enjoyable. We are specially impressed by his quick action and management skills. Our flight to Pokhara got cancelled due to bed weather. Within minutes, Puru was able to arrange a car and a driver to drive us to Pokhara! It saved out trip.Posted on Tripadvisor Sally M14 November 2025Verified Glorious trekking experience - ABC We had the most wonderful experience doing the Annapurna Base Camp trek with our fabulous guide, Tanka, and porter, Ravi. The trek was glorious, despite some rainy days, and although we weren't sure we would get to see the peaks at ABC, the weather cleared just in time and we had an amazing sunrise there. What made the whole trip so special, though, were Tanka and Ravi, who remained cheerful at all times and went out of their way to make everything as good as it could be. This included setting a pace with regular breaks which made the walking completely manageable, modifying the itinerary so we could visit additional villages, getting up in the middle of the night to see if the sky would be clear for sunrise, and bringing a sense of ease and humour to all our interactions. We just loved the whole thing and are keen to return to Nepal for another trek. It was magical!Posted on Tripadvisor Peter E27 October 2025Verified Above the Himalayas goes above and beyond expectations! From start to finish everything was perfect! Puru, the managing director, was always quick with his responses to my questions when I first contacted him about planning our trek, and he continued to check to see that everything was going well throughout. Our guide Tanka and porter Ravi were fantastic! Their friendly demeanor kept our experience lively and interesting the entire time and made sure that we were well taken care of. Even small details like Ravi coming in and double checking our rooms to see that we had left nothing behind before leaving each morning, and seeing that meals were prepared the way we liked them weren't overlooked. Tanka was also quite knowledgeable about the mountains, the people, and just about everything "Nepal". He enthusiastically shared stories about his family and Nepalese life in a general way.Although there was a clear itinerary each day, and for the whole trek, Tanka allowed for flexibility in terms of time and where to stay. He was even willing and able to make changes to same-day accommodation based on how far we anticipated hiking that morning. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our hike and I would definitely recommend Above the Himalayas for anyone considering a trek.Posted on Tripadvisor Akane U25 October 2025Verified Amazing tour For me and my son, Pru thought of a four-day trekking tour. His interaction was very smooth. On the first day, I went with my son to Gandrouk, and on the second day, he went to a higher place (mulde view point, Poon hill) with his guide Ashok. Ashok was very kind and took me to various local places. The food was also very good.My guide, Tangka, was very kind and helped me a lot.I recommend this travel agency because it's great.Posted on Tripadvisor Daniel F24 October 2025Verified Everest Base Camp Trek My friends and I just completed the EBC trek. From the time I met Puru at the Canada Place trade show in Vancouver BC, Canada I felt comfortable going to Nepal. His communications via WhatsApp were seamless answering all our questions. Everything went exactly according to plan. Our guide Suresh was amazing. He took very good care of us the whole time. From guiding us to making sure we had everything we needed to be happy. The food the whole way up and back was amazing! 5 ⭐️. Our 2 porters were great as well. I have a whole new respect and appreciation for what they do. They are the true hero’s to what we can do as a team. We chose the basic trek the lodging was to be expected. If I was to do again I would choose the luxury trek. The hotels in Kathmandu at the Hotel Aloft and the Hotel Lo Mustang were top notch as well as the buffets. Highly recommend this local company!Posted on Tripadvisor adrienne h24 October 2025Verified Great tour, would recommend! My friend and I completed the 10 day Annapurna circuit with Above Trekking Himalaya. Buddha our porter was a little mountain goat, pocket rocket. When I got altitude sickness he carried my bag, as well as mine and my friend’s big pack. He was friendly and loved to played cards with us, always with a cheeky smile on his face. Sitaram our guide was very knowledgeable of the area and quite serious. He was always available if we had any questions and went above and beyond to try get us the best/quietest rooms in the tea houses. Puru was fabulous working behind the scenes to ensure our trip was as smooth as possible. He was very quick to respond to any messages. It was a great experience to see Nepal with some locals and I certainly appreciated their support when I succumbed to altitude sickness. They stayed close to us the whole time and checked in frequently making us feeling safe and supported the entire time.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
