Overview of Panch Pokhari Trek
The Panch Pokhari Trek is a short Himalayan journey that leads to five sacred lakes in the Sindhupalchok district of Nepal. This trail is peaceful, passing small mountain villages, woodland and steep slopes and high mountain terrain without being overly long. For those who want a less developed trekking region and yet do not wish to spend too many days on the trail, it is a good alternative.
It begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Chhimti and then a walk. The path from Chhimti winds through forest and through the villages of the hills leading to Nyasim Pati (3,700 m / 12,139 ft). As it rises in elevation, it begins to show less of the flat terrain and more of the cool mountain vistas.
The next section is to Panch Pokhari (approx. 4,100m / 13,451ft). Panch Pokhari translates to five lakes, which is the name given to the collection of holy lakes in this high mountain region. The lakes are also of religious significance, as they are visited during the Janai Purnima festival. It also offers a view of surrounding peaks of the Himalayas in clear weather.
There are some walking days which are a bit long on the Panch Pokhari Trek, so one needs to prepare accordingly. The time taken for Chhimti to Nyasim Pati is approximately 7-8 hours and Panch Pokhari to Chhimti is approximately 8-9 hours. The path has a few steep inclines, steps that lead up and down, rough surfaces and forest roads. After a rain or in the winter, conditions can become more challenging.
The path stretches to over 4,000 m / 13,123 ft), which means altitude cannot be overlooked. These include maintaining a steady walk, drinking enough water, wearing warm clothing and knowing the signs and symptoms of altitude sickness. Facilities are basic in the higher areas and trekkers should expect to find basic facilities at best.
The Panch Pokhari trekking route also links with the other trekking region of Langtang and the northeast part of Nepal. Those who favor extended travel may opt for a trip to Langtang Valley, Gosaikunda, Helambu and Jugal Himal. This makes it an area that can be nice for trekking for those who don’t usually trek in Nepal.
Above the Himalaya is available to arrange the necessary permits, transport, guides, porters, accommodation and other services for travellers seeking a practical and well-organized trip, which are included in the package chosen.
Location and Route Overview
Panch Pokhari is situated in the central part of Nepal in Sindhupalchok District, which is northeast of Kathmandu. The trekking area is part of the larger Jugal Himalayan region, famed for its five sacred lakes. It starts with a road drive from Kathmandu to Chhimti and then gradually goes up through forests, villages and higher mountain areas.
The trail reaches Nyasim Pati (3,700 m / 12,139 ft) then heads towards Panch Pokhari (4,100 m / 13,451 ft). The route is mainly the same as the one to Chhimti before Kathmandu, with a few changes. The Panch Pokhari trekking route is a relatively remote route and facilities are not as developed as popular trekking routes.
| Route Section | Elevation | Approx. Time | Terrain and Main Features |
| Kathmandu to Chhimti | (1,800 m / 5,906 ft) | 6 to 7 hours | Mountain road, villages and hills |
| Chhimti to Nyasim Pati | (3,700 m / 12,139 ft) | 7 to 8 hours | Forest, steep climbs and stone steps |
| Nyasim Pati to Panch Pokhari | (4,100 m / 13,451 ft) | 3 to 4 hours | Alpine trail and sacred lakes |
| Panch Pokhari to Chhimti | (1,800 m / 5,906 ft) | 8 to 9 hours | Long downhill trail and forests |
| Chhimti to Kathmandu | (1,800 m / 5,906 ft) | 6 to 7 hours | Mountain road and rural settlements |
The total journey of the Panch Pokhari Trek is thus a mixture of road, forest walks, high-altitude walks and back to the same mountain area.
Why Choose This Trek?
The Panch Pokhari Trek is ideal for those who prefer a less crowded path through the Himalayas and are looking for a more moderate trek. This trail winds through forests, mountain villages and changing scenery to five sacred lakes at about 4,100 m / 13,451 ft) above sea level.
Aside from the natural experiences, trekking through the Panch Pokhari also brings with it some cultural experiences. Local village life can be witnessed, different types of vegetation can be trekked and the religious significance of the lakes can be learnt. Trails are not as developed as some of the popular hiking trails, making the experience more akin to the rural mountain way of life.
The Panch Pokhari Trek also suits short-stay travellers without compromising any of the high altitude walks, breathtaking mountain scenery and the purposeful destination in the Himalayas.
Itinerary of Panch Pokhari Trek
01
Day 01: Drive from Kathmandu to Chhimti Village
The initial road trip is from Kathmandu to Chhimti Village, where the trek begins to Panch Pokhari. It will take about 6 to 7 hours through winding roads that pass through rural settlements, terraced farmland, river valleys and forested hills. The farther you’re away from Kathmandu, the more remote the road. The Chhimti Village is located at (1800 m / 5906 ft) and offers an uncomplicated overnight stay.
Depending on the road and the travelling time it takes to reach Chhimti, lunch may be taken during the journey or after. Once there, there’s time to get the walking gear and materials organised and get ready for the first walking day. Accommodation is usually in a local lodge or teahouse. Today is primarily about transportation; no major trekking section is required.
02
Day 02: Trek from Chhimti Village to Nyasim Pati
The walk commences from Chhimti Village (1,800m / 5,906ft) after breakfast. The path slowly ascends through the woods and a more tranquil mountain setting. The terrain becomes more alpine at higher elevations and the vegetation shifts from the lower hillside to alpine vegetation. There are a few ups and downs on the ride, so it’s important to keep a good tempo.
The journey is then onward to the site of Nyasim Pati (also known as Nosyampati) (3,700 m / 12,139 ft). The walking distance is approximately 8 to 9 kilometres and typically 7 to 8 hours depending on the trail conditions and walking speed. Once at Nyasim Pati, you can sleep at a simple tea house and get ready for the next day’s trek to a higher altitude. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided.
03
Day 03: Trek from Nyasim Pati to Panch Pokhari
The hike is shorter than yesterday, but leads up to a higher altitude at Panch Pokhari. Following breakfast, the trail goes up into open alpine fields and along the mountain crest. The walk lasts some 3-4 hours and is the length of about 4-5 kilometres.
Panch Pokhari lies at an approximate elevation of 4000 m/13451 ft and is famous for the cluster of five sacred lakes. Once there, it is possible to get to know the lakes and the religious site nearby. The surrounding landscape consists of high ridges and mountain views (weather dependent). The facilities and accommodation at this elevation are basic. Typically, breakfast, lunch and dinner are available.
04
Day 04: Trek from Panch Pokhari to Chhimti Village
After breakfast at Panch Pokhari, it is time to head back home. From about 4,100 m / 13,451 ft), the path runs down in the same direction towards Chhimti Village. Mostly downhill, but the day is long and there are a few patchy and steep descents that can be quite challenging.
It’s about a 12 to 13 km walk, which takes around 8 to 9 hours. As you descend, the scenery evolves; you pass through alpine scenes and then woods and lower vegetation up and down the hillside. Upon arrival at Chhimti (1,800 m / 5,906 ft), you’ll have the option to stay at a local lodge or teahouse. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided during the day.
05
Day 05: Drive from Chhimti Village to Kathmandu
The last day of the holiday starts with a drive from Chhimti Village to Kathmandu after breakfast. Chhimti is located at approximately (1,800 m / 5,906 ft), while Kathmandu sits at around (1,400 m / 4,593 ft). The drive takes approximately 6-7 hours and passes through rural communities and the rolling landscape of the hills.
The trek takes you slowly back into the hustle and bustle of the Kathmandu Valley. Typically, lunch is served on the route, subject to road conditions and travel plans. The Panch Pokhari tour ends in Kathmandu. The rest of the onward travel time can be used up. Last day breakfast and lunch are included.

Route Map & Altitude Chart
Best Time for the Panch Pokhari Trek
Spring and autumn are typically the best times for the Panch Pokhari Trek, as trails are usually stable and mountain views are excellent. In spring, the days are warmer and rhododendron flowers; in the autumn, mostly clearer after monsoon.
Rain is one of the issues that can occur during the monsoon season, as can muddy trails or road problems. It can be very cold around the higher sections in winter and snow may occur. Experience also varies depending on the weather conditions of the year.
| Month | Weather and Trail Conditions | Visibility | Trekking Considerations |
| January | Cold, especially at higher elevations; possible snow | Often clear on dry days | Suitable for experienced trekkers prepared for winter conditions |
| February | Cold mornings and nights | Gradually improving | Snow and frozen sections may remain |
| March | Warmer lower sections; spring begins | Generally improving | Good preparation for changing temperatures is needed |
| April | Mild conditions and spring vegetation | Usually good | A suitable month for trekking |
| May | Warm lower areas with generally manageable high altitude conditions | Often good before monsoon clouds increase | Good time for the trek |
| June | Rain begins in many lower areas | Variable | Mud and slippery trails become more likely |
| July | Monsoon rain and wet trails | Often cloudy | Less predictable road and trail conditions |
| August | Wet conditions; pilgrimage activity around Janai Purnima | Variable | Suitable mainly for trekkers prepared for rain |
| September | Monsoon gradually weakens | Improving toward late September | Conditions can change quickly |
| October | Stable autumn weather in many years | Usually very good | One of the more practical periods for trekking |
| November | Cool and generally dry | Often clear | Good conditions, with colder nights |
| December | Cold, particularly above the forest zone | Often clear during settled weather | Winter equipment is important |
Panch Pokhari Trek Difficulty and Daily Walking
This is a moderate to difficult hike due to the long days of walking and relatively steep climb. The steepness of the course is not the only challenge; the uphill stretches to Nyasim Pati and Panch Pokhari are also quite tough.
The trail to Panch Pokhari involves hiking in the forest, climbing stone steps, steep sides of hills and high altitude areas. The trekkers should be prepared to walk for several hours a day and should be ready for a long hike home from Panch Pokhari to Chhimti.
| Day | Route | Walking Time | Approx. Walking Distance |
| 1 | Kathmandu to Chhimti by road | 6 to 7 hrs | Road journey |
| 2 | Chhimti to Nyasim Pati | 7 to 8 hrs | About 12 to 13 km |
| 3 | Nyasim Pati to Panch Pokhari | 3 to 4 hrs | About 5 km |
| 4 | Panch Pokhari to Chhimti | 8 to 9 hrs | About 16 to 18 km |
| 5 | Chhimti to Kathmandu by road | 6 to 7 hrs | Road journey |
Please note that distances on foot may vary depending on the trail you choose and road/trail conditions.
Altitude Gain and Acclimatization
The itinerary is short and goes from Chhimti to Panch Pokhari in a short distance, so the altitude change is important to consider. There is a significant increase, especially on the second and third days.
| Location | Approx. Elevation | Role in the Trek | Altitude Consideration |
| Chhimti | (1,800 m / 5,906 ft) | Trek starting area | Relatively low |
| Deurali | (2,105 m / 6,906 ft) | Early trail section | Gradual gain |
| Tuppi Danda | (2,400 m / 7,874 ft) | Forest section | Continued ascent |
| Rato Mato | (3,115 m / 10,220 ft) | Higher forest section | Altitude becomes more noticeable |
| Chokar Danda | (3,240 m / 10,630 ft) | Ridge section | Rest and steady pacing are useful |
| Nyasim Pati | (3,700 m / 12,139 ft) | High overnight stop | Important altitude gain |
| Panch Pokhari | (4,100 m / 13,451 ft) | Main destination | Highest overnight area |
| Panch Pokhari Viewpoint | Around (4,220 m / 13,845 ft) | Optional viewpoint | Higher than the lakes |
Acute mountain sickness can develop above (3,000 m / 9,843 ft). Maintaining hydration, walking slowly, eating well and reporting symptoms early are key precautions.
Trail Conditions and Terrain
The trail starts to really vary along the way. The lower stretch passes through forest and hillside settlements, steepening and becoming more open towards Nyasim Pati and Panch Pokhari.
| Trail Section | Typical Terrain | Main Features | What to Expect |
| Chhimti to Deurali | Road, stairs and forest trail | Bridge and waterfall areas | Short but uphill |
| Deurali to Tuppi Danda | Forest path | Quiet woodland | Gradual climbing |
| Tuppi Danda to Rato Mato | Steeper forest trail | Long uphill section | Requires steady pacing |
| Rato Mato to Chokar Danda | Uphill ridge trail | Mountain views | More exposed sections |
| Chokar Danda to Nyasim Pati | Steep hillside trail | High altitude landscape | Strong ascent |
| Nyasim Pati to Lauribina | Steep trail and steps | Alpine terrain | Physically demanding |
| Lauribina to Panch Pokhari | Short final ascent | Sacred lake area | Cold and exposed conditions possible |
Post-rain or snow conditions may change along the trail. Steep and uneven terrain is good for trekking poles and good footwear. Route information identifies the approach from Chhimti as a combination of forest trails, stairs, uphill sections and high mountain terrain.
Panch Pokhari Trek Permits and Required Documents
A set of required documents must be sorted before embarking on the journey. According to the latest information provided by the Nepal Tourism Board, the Panch Pokhari Trek is included in the Panch Pokhari Bhairabkunda Area, in which a Nepal Tourism Board (Nepalibama) issued TIMS card is mandatory.
Trekkers don’t have to process the permits and TIMS application process themselves; they are included in the package by Above the Himalaya.
However, it is important to have the original passport as well as a copy of the details of your passport with you. Be sure to have permits and a TIMS with you for the hike; papers can be reviewed during the hike. Requirements may vary, so please check with the agency for the current requirements prior to departure.
Accommodation and Overnight Facilities
Accommodation on this trail is less luxurious than on popular trekking trails. Teahouses and lodges offer basic lodging and accommodations get scarcer at higher altitudes. Additionally, Panch Pokhari is a more remote region and trekkers should be ready for minimal facilities, as per Langtang National Park management information.
The rooms are usually furnished with simple beds and blankets, but one should not expect facilities like those found in hotels. Bathrooms can be shared and hot showers/able to charge may not be available at all times.
Nyasim Pati and Panch Pokhari offer fewer facilities than big trekking centres. So, a warm sleeping bag is good to have, especially in colder weather.
Food, Drinking Water and Water Purification
The average menu for meals is very basic local teahouse fare. Dal bhat, noodles, rice dishes, soups, pasta, eggs, potatoes, tea and other basic meals may be available depending on the lodge and season.
The further away you are from the food source, the more restricted your food options are. A couple of energy snacks are helpful on a long day’s walk.
Water for drinking should be a priority. Trekkers must have treated water for their lodges or use an appropriate treatment tablet, filter, or another acceptable means of water purification. Never drink untreated water from streams. Bring enough water for sections where there isn’t a lot of water available.
Transportation and Road Conditions
The journey starts with a road trip from Kathmandu towards Chhimti. The duration of the drive is approximately 6 to 7 hours, but travel time may vary depending on traffic, construction, weather and road conditions.
Chhimti is a known entry point to the Panch Pokhari route and road transport plays a significant role in the route.
Roads off of main highways may be narrow, winding and rough. Rain may impact the surface of roads and travel times during the monsoon season. Private car service or appropriate local transportation is available as per package. Please note that the road conditions in the mountains can vary and the trekker should be prepared to be flexible with his/her schedule.
Weather and Temperature at Different Elevations
Changes in the weather are noticeable as the trail rises in elevation. Lower villages may feel relatively warm during the day while Nyasim Pati and Panch Pokhari may be cold even if comfortable at lower altitudes.
| Area | Approx. Elevation | Typical Daytime Feel | Nighttime Conditions | Main Concern |
| Chhimti | (1,800 m / 5,906 ft) | Mild to warm depending on season | Cool | Rain and changing road conditions |
| Tuppi Danda | (2,400 m / 7,874 ft) | Mild | Cool | Changing weather |
| Rato Mato | (3,115 m / 10,220 ft) | Cooler | Cold | Increasing altitude |
| Chokar Danda | (3,240 m / 10,630 ft) | Cool | Cold | Wind and cloud |
| Nyasim Pati | (3,700 m / 12,139 ft) | Cold | Very cold | Wind, cold and altitude |
| Panch Pokhari | (4,100 m / 13,451 ft) | Cold | Very cold | Snow, wind and rapid weather changes |
| Viewpoint | Around (4,220 m / 13,845 ft) | Cold and exposed | Usually not an overnight stop | Wind and exposure |
The climate is subject to variations according to the month, the weather pattern, wind and the sun. Proper layering is more useful than just a set temperature range.
Mobile Network, Internet and Charging Facilities
Not all the trail is covered by mobile signal. Network coverage may be available in some lower settlements and may be weak or nonexistent in higher and more distant areas.
Do not assume that Internet access will be available. Where available, Wi Fi may be slow or require a cellphone or mobile network connection.
There are also some overnight stops where charging is limited. If you use your phone for photos, navigation, communication, or as an emergency tool, the power bank is highly recommended.
Print off important documents, maps and contact numbers before leaving Kathmandu. Don’t forget to keep the phone on low power mode and bring a spare battery in case you have a long day of walking.
Health, Altitude Safety and Emergency Evacuation
Altitude is the main health consideration on this trek. The route ends at around (4,100 m / 13,451 ft), where it is important to listen to symptoms including headache, dizziness, unusual tiredness, nausea, or difficulty breathing.
Walk at a leisurely pace and do not hurry when going uphill. Drink plenty of water and have regular meals. If symptoms get worse, report to your guide and don’t try to continue in silence.
- Don’t think the symptoms at altitude are getting worse.
- Take rest breaks as necessary and work at a consistent speed.
- Steer clear of alcohol when at higher elevations.
- Stay warm, particularly after dark.
- Bring your personal medication and basic first aid kit.
- If a change of itinerary is required, follow the guide’s instructions.
It is recommended to bring group trekking supplies, first aid supplies, rain protection and appropriate precautions for high altitude travel. It also recommends calling a local agency for helicopter evacuation services, if necessary.
Money, Cash and Extra Trekking Expenses
Use of cash is a crucial component because one can’t expect cards or ATMs on this far-flung journey. It is preferable to leave or exchange enough Nepalese currency in Kathmandu prior to travel.
The services listed in the inclusions are typically included in your main package. You may have to pay extra for personal expenses like extra drinks, snacks, charging, hot showers (if available), tips and extra transportation.
Keep some extra cash on hand for unexpected expenses instead of only for discretionary items. Do not leave all the cash in your daypack.
Useful small notes; some local shops and lodges might not have any change. Your guide will also be able to give you a rough idea of how much money you’ll be spending a day before you go on the trek.
Travel Insurance for the Panch Pokhari Trek
The route has fairly high altitudes (around 4,100 m / 13,451 ft) and long stretches away from the safe zone, so travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your policy needs to cover trekking at the highest point of your trip.
Make sure to read the policy carefully and not assume that a general travel policy automatically applies to mountain trekking. Helpful places to look are emergency medical treatment, evacuation, trip interruption and delays due to unforeseen circumstances.
If your insurance company does provide helicopter evacuation on your route, this should be covered. Inquire about any restrictions for altitude sickness and whether the insurance company needs to be notified beforehand.
Have your policy information, emergency contact phone number, passport information and the instructions of your insurance company on your phone and in print.
Packing Guide for the Panch Pokhari Trek
Packing should take into account the upper trail’s warm clothing needs, while taking into account the lower trail’s lighter clothing needs. Personal essentials should be brought from Kathmandu, as there is limited availability of facilities.
- Waterproof trekking shoes with good grip.
- Warm base layers & fleece
- Insulated jacket for use at high altitudes.
- A waterproof jacket and trousers.
- Warm hat, gloves and additional socks.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Reusable water bottles
- Tablets or filters to purify water.
- Headlamp and spare batteries.
- Power bank and charging cable
- Personal medicines and basic first aid supplies.
- Sleeping bag appropriate for cold weather.
- Trekking poles
- Passport & Permit copies
- Personal toiletries
The daypack is for items that are required during the walk; heavier items will be arranged as per the package that includes porter service.
Guides, Porters and Trekking Support
A guide is particularly useful on this route because the trail becomes remote and the elevation rises quickly. Current Nepal Tourism Board rules list Panch Pokhari Trek among the routes requiring a licensed trekking guide and an agency-issued TIMS card.
Above the Himalaya can arrange the selected package’s guide and porter support. The guide helps with route planning, booking accommodation, pace and communicating with the local community.
With porters, you can have a lighter daypack and take the heavier portion of your trekking gear. Carry personal belongings, valuables, paperwork, water and anything else that might be needed during the day’s hike in your personal pack.
Solo Trekking vs Guided Trekking
There are many differences between independent trekking and guided trekking, especially on a less developed route like this.
| Aspect | Solo or Independent Travel | Guided Trekking |
| Route navigation | Traveller manages navigation | Guide handles route guidance |
| Permits | Traveller manages arrangements | Agency arranges required documents |
| Accommodation | Traveller finds and confirms rooms | Guide coordinates lodges |
| Meals | Traveller orders directly | Guide can help with arrangements |
| Altitude concerns | Traveller makes decisions independently | Guide monitors pace and symptoms |
| Communication | Traveller handles local communication | Guide assists with communication |
| Emergency response | Traveller must coordinate help | Guide and agency assist with arrangements |
| Language | Requires more independent communication | Local guide provides language support |
| Baggage | Traveller manages own luggage | Porter support may be arranged |
| Route changes | Traveller makes decisions | Guide can advise based on conditions |
For the Panch Pokhari Trek under these routes, it is recommended for trekkers to plan their trek according to the current regulations and assume that they don’t have to trek independently, as it is not permitted.
Panch Pokhari Lakes and Religious Significance
Panch Pokhari translates to five lakes and is a group of sacred lakes around (4,100 m / 13,451 ft). This site is considered to be of pilgrimage importance, especially for Hindu worshippers and the area is also culturally related to the wider communities around the Himalayas.
The lakes are particularly linked to the Janai Purnima period when people visit to do religious ceremonies. During this time, the weather can be wet and the season of pilgrimage and trekking is not ideal.
The lakes should not be visited for photography alone, but also as a place of religious significance to the trekkers. Do not enter the water unless authorized, maintain a low noise level and adhere to local instructions during religious events.
Local Culture, Villages and Trekking Etiquette
The trail winds through communities where agriculture, livestock farming, local commerce and traditional way of life are still significant aspects of daily living. Beyond that, Tamang, Hyolmo and other communities of the Himalayas live in the broader region, where Buddhism is intermingled with Hinduism in various places.
- Do not take pictures of anyone or private property without permission.
- Respect the dress code around temples, shrines and religious places.
- Play by local rules at festive events, ceremonies, etc.
- Don’t make loud noises in religious buildings.
- Please refrain from entering homes or monasteries without permission.
- Avoid littering the trail and village areas.
- Respect local traditions, regardless of their opposition to yours.
- Buy local products or services wherever possible.
Interactions with the locals are more comfortable if they receive a friendly greeting and respectful behavior.
Photography, Drones and Responsible Tourism
Photography is part and parcel of this journey; whether you’re in the forest, along a mountain ridge, or visiting the five lakes, the landscape is changing all the time. Yet photographs should not be in the way of religious activities and local privacy.
- Do not take photographs of local people without permission.
- Don’t take pictures or videos of religious services without permission.
- Do not leave your camera or phone behind in challenging areas.
- Carry spare batteries or a power bank.
- Don’t dispose of packages or other trash while taking pictures.
- Verify the current aviation regulations before carrying or using a drone.
- Do not fly near people, settlements, or aircraft routes or areas of restriction.
- Obey local officials and the trekking company.
It is important to practice responsible photography around Panch Pokhari, which is a sacred pilgrimage site of the lakes.
Wildlife, Forests and Natural Environment
The vegetation along the lower and middle portion of the trail is mostly woodland and as the trail rises to higher elevations, the vegetation becomes more alpine. The Langtang area and the Panch Pokhari area have a wider range of plants, including rhododendron, pine, fir, oak and more.
In addition to being seen in the zoo, wildlife can be seen in the surrounding areas, including musk deer, Himalayan tahr, goral, Himalayan black bear and red panda.
Wildlife feeding and approaching animals should be restricted for trekkers. Carry rubbish back to designated disposal points and avoid collecting plants, flowers, rocks, or other natural materials.
Low noise levels can also minimise disturbance to wildlife. Waste and water use are critical to the condition of remote mountain environments.
Emergency Communication and Rescue Arrangements
It is important to plan for emergencies as some parts of the Panch Pokhari route are remote and mobile communications might be poor. Itinerary, emergency contacts and pertinent travel information should be on your guide’s or agency’s list prior to departure.
If a serious health problem occurs, it is essential that the guide is notified at once. The guide can evaluate the situation and communicate with the agency and local services available.
Helicopter evacuation should be considered if it is medically indicated and the weather and operational circumstances are conducive to it. It must not be regarded as an automatic service. It is important to have travel insurance with the proper evacuation coverage.
It is advised that the trekkers use the designated route, trek in groups, carry basic safety equipment and contact their local agency for arrangements to be made for helicopter evacuation as necessary.
Other Treks in the Region
It can be compared to several different treks in Langtang and northeastern central Nepal as it is part of the region. There are lake walks, cultural trails, high mountain walks and longer hikes through the wilderness.
| Trek | Approx. Character | Typical High Point | Suitable For | Main Difference |
| Panch Pokhari Trek | Moderate to challenging | (4,100 m / 13,451 ft) | Sacred lakes and shorter Himalayan trekking | Five sacred lakes and remote approach |
| Langtang Valley Trek | Moderate | Around (4,984 m / 16,352 ft) at Tserko Ri if included | Mountain scenery and culture | Larger valley with established teahouse network |
| Gosaikunda Trek | Moderate to challenging | Around (4,380 m / 14,370 ft) | Sacred lakes and high mountain walking | Gosaikunda Lake and Lauribina La |
| Helambu Trek | Moderate | Varies by itinerary | Short cultural trekking | Hyolmo villages and easier access from Kathmandu |
| Tamang Heritage Trail | Moderate | Generally lower than Panch Pokhari | Culture and village experience | Focus on Tamang communities |
| Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek | Challenging | Around (4,700 m / 15,420 ft) | Remote mountain trekking | More remote wilderness and high alpine terrain |
| Ganja La Pass Trek | Difficult | Around (5,180 m / 16,995 ft) | Experienced trekkers | High pass crossing between Langtang and Helambu |
| Tilman Pass Trek | Difficult to strenuous | Around (5,300 m / 17,388 ft) | Experienced trekkers | Remote high altitude traverse |
This will depend on the amount of time available, walking experience, scenery that is preferred and capability of being accommodated to remote conditions. The routes of Jugal Himal, Ganja La and Tilman Pass are considerably more challenging than the basic Panch Pokhari trek.

Accommodation is basic, with simple rooms and shared facilities, especially in and around Nyasim Pati and Panch Pokhari.
Hot showers are not a given – especially at higher, more distant, overnight staging points along the way.
Charging at higher stops might be limited, which is why it’s a good idea to bring a power bank with essential electronics.
Packing & Gear
Yes, a sleeping bag that is suitable for warm temperatures is recommended, as nights can be extremely cold and nights are a basic part of a holiday.
Yes, it is feasible to layer because the temperature can fluctuate a great deal between Chhimti and the higher trekking regions.
Yes, poles can offer extra stability when going up steep inclines, stone steps, uneven ground and longer downhill stretches.
Booking & Payment
Yes, this 5-day tour is a mix of both road trips and high-altitude trekking, but not a very long journey into the Himalayas.
Absolutely, mountain roads can be delayed due to weather, road work, traffic, or conditions the agency cannot control.
Permits and TIMS are part of the package arranged by the agency and a passport ID is to be taken by trekkers.

Thank you for the best tour we have ever had! I planned to stay at the Everest View Hotel this time and travel there because I wanted to see Everest, the highest mountain in the world, slowly, but despite the short schedule due to my children's school, all I got was a response that it was difficult to contact several tour companies. The Himaraya Trekking, Above, has worked out a smooth and safe schedule and had the best experience for me and my family. I will never forget the view of Mount Everest. Thank you very much.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Another Amazing Trip with Above the Himalaya This is my 3rd trip with Above the Himalaya and Puru. Each trip with Puru has exceeded expectation with the quality of the guides, porters and attention to detail. We were a team of 5 trekker and our ages were all above 67 years of age with the oldest being 73. We are all experienced hikers and trekker and our plan was to trek up the Khumbu Valley to the Cho La pass to Gokyo to the Renjo La pass to return to Lukla. However, the weather altered our plans as Cyclone Montha blanketed the country in rain at lower elevations and significant snowfall at the upper elevations. Due to the weather, no one was trekking and everyone was staying put in their current location during the storm. All the passes were closed due to the deep snow. We were in Namche when the storm was blanketing the country. This is where Above the Himalaya really shines is in the ability to adapt to the changing conditions and our safety. In conversation with our lead guide, we decided to alter our route to trek through the Gokyo valley to reach Gokyo and then do the Renjo La pass. Sitaram our lead guide and Dhurba our assistant guide was both attentive to the changing conditions and always kept a keen eye for how we were doing and feeling on the trek. The pacing was excellent as none of us had any hint of altitude sickness as we reached a maximum elevation of 5,365m.Having trekked and hiked all over the world with different tour companies, Puru’s company is simply the best. The communications, focus on safety, the guides and staff, the accommodations, and the food are all amazing. All you have to do is focus on the beauty of the mountains, enjoy the joyfulness of the Nepali people and have fun exploring the trails. I am planning my next trip with Puru for 2027 as there is no other trekking company to match Puru’s level of service.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Take a small step into the Himalayas I went with Above The Himalaya Trekking’s Everest View Hike in November 2025 and can only recommend with my whole heart!I had never visited Nepal or the Himalayas before and had a life long dream of seeing Mt Everest. I had though, hiked a lot in various parts of the world, but never above 2000 m, so I went with the five day Everest View Trek to take a small step and see how I would handle the altitude. From first enquiry about dates and various questions, to my arrival back from the trip, Puru has been an invaluable help, always standby on mail and WhatsApp, pulling strings and making things happen. Also big shout out to the amazing guide I was teamed with, Kamal, who did everything he could to answer all my curious questions about vegetation, animal life, Nepalese culture and everything in-between :) Kamal was the perfect gentleman, offering little treats and reminding me to take breaks, and all in all I felt very safe and in good hands all the time. He also had good banter and jokes, which lifted the spirit of even the hardest climb. It was cold most nights and mornings and even though the tea houses provided heavy blankets (and I could borrow extra) I was glad I had the sleeping bag with me, which I rented through Puru. But I could definitely have survived without and saved the space in my pack.In total, I’m very pleased I’ve got to experience this lovely country with Above the Himalaya Trekking and if I ever come back for the big leap into the mountains, I’ll chose Kamal and Puru all over again :)Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Nepal trek-Gokyo Second trek with Above the Himalaya, this time to Gokyo and over Renjo La. Our lead and assistant guides (Sitaram and Dhurba) were excellent. Due to several days of rain at lower elevations and snow higher we needed to change our plans while in the midst of our trek. Above the Himalaya accomplished this smoothly and flawlessly, which ultimately resulted in a better experience. We’ll be back!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Great Experience and Friendly people. We had a great time with Above the Himalayas tour company in Oct. Ajay, the tour guide in Kathmandu is very friendly and knowledgeable. He took us to a lot of places that we can experience local authentic daily life. Puru, the owner, arranged and organized our trip in such way that we really feel comfortable and enjoyable. We are specially impressed by his quick action and management skills. Our flight to Pokhara got cancelled due to bed weather. Within minutes, Puru was able to arrange a car and a driver to drive us to Pokhara! It saved out trip.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Glorious trekking experience - ABC We had the most wonderful experience doing the Annapurna Base Camp trek with our fabulous guide, Tanka, and porter, Ravi. The trek was glorious, despite some rainy days, and although we weren't sure we would get to see the peaks at ABC, the weather cleared just in time and we had an amazing sunrise there. What made the whole trip so special, though, were Tanka and Ravi, who remained cheerful at all times and went out of their way to make everything as good as it could be. This included setting a pace with regular breaks which made the walking completely manageable, modifying the itinerary so we could visit additional villages, getting up in the middle of the night to see if the sky would be clear for sunrise, and bringing a sense of ease and humour to all our interactions. We just loved the whole thing and are keen to return to Nepal for another trek. It was magical!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Above the Himalayas goes above and beyond expectations! From start to finish everything was perfect! Puru, the managing director, was always quick with his responses to my questions when I first contacted him about planning our trek, and he continued to check to see that everything was going well throughout. Our guide Tanka and porter Ravi were fantastic! Their friendly demeanor kept our experience lively and interesting the entire time and made sure that we were well taken care of. Even small details like Ravi coming in and double checking our rooms to see that we had left nothing behind before leaving each morning, and seeing that meals were prepared the way we liked them weren't overlooked. Tanka was also quite knowledgeable about the mountains, the people, and just about everything "Nepal". He enthusiastically shared stories about his family and Nepalese life in a general way.Although there was a clear itinerary each day, and for the whole trek, Tanka allowed for flexibility in terms of time and where to stay. He was even willing and able to make changes to same-day accommodation based on how far we anticipated hiking that morning. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our hike and I would definitely recommend Above the Himalayas for anyone considering a trek.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Everest Base Camp Trek My friends and I just completed the EBC trek. From the time I met Puru at the Canada Place trade show in Vancouver BC, Canada I felt comfortable going to Nepal. His communications via WhatsApp were seamless answering all our questions. Everything went exactly according to plan. Our guide Suresh was amazing. He took very good care of us the whole time. From guiding us to making sure we had everything we needed to be happy. The food the whole way up and back was amazing! 5 ⭐️. Our 2 porters were great as well. I have a whole new respect and appreciation for what they do. They are the true hero’s to what we can do as a team. We chose the basic trek the lodging was to be expected. If I was to do again I would choose the luxury trek. The hotels in Kathmandu at the Hotel Aloft and the Hotel Lo Mustang were top notch as well as the buffets. Highly recommend this local company!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Great tour, would recommend! My friend and I completed the 10 day Annapurna circuit with Above Trekking Himalaya. Buddha our porter was a little mountain goat, pocket rocket. When I got altitude sickness he carried my bag, as well as mine and my friend’s big pack. He was friendly and loved to played cards with us, always with a cheeky smile on his face. Sitaram our guide was very knowledgeable of the area and quite serious. He was always available if we had any questions and went above and beyond to try get us the best/quietest rooms in the tea houses. Puru was fabulous working behind the scenes to ensure our trip was as smooth as possible. He was very quick to respond to any messages. It was a great experience to see Nepal with some locals and I certainly appreciated their support when I succumbed to altitude sickness. They stayed close to us the whole time and checked in frequently making us feeling safe and supported the entire time.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
